UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
SAMPSON HARVEY BROWN, OF LEESVILLE, TEXAS.
INDICATOR FOR MERCHANDISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,236, ated April 7, 1885.
Application filed Marclh 13, 1884. (No model.)To a l whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMPSON H. BROWN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of
Leesville, in the county of Gonzales and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and use-
ful Improvements in Indicators for Merchan-
dise; and I do hereby declare that the follow-
ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the
invention, which will enable others skilled in
Io the art to which it appertains to make and use
the same, reference being had to the accom-
panying drawings, which form a part of this
specification, and in which-
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved
15 indicator or marking device for boxes, &c.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the front half of
the device removed. Fig. 3isacross-sectional
view taken on line x x, Fig. 1; and Figs. 4
and 5 are perspective detail views of the metal
20 catches.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-
sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to apparatus or devices
for marking or indicating upon the outside of
25 boxes or drawers the names and prices of the
merchandise or other articles contained there-
in; and it consists in the improved construction
and combination of parts of a device of the
above-mentioned class, as will be hereinafter
30 more fully described, and particularly pointed
out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre-
sents the back portion of my improved device,
which consists of a square or rectangular piece
35 or strip of any suitable material-such as
paper-board, sheet metal, or any similar ma-
terial-which is provided on its front face with
the vertical grooves or recesses A'.
B indicates endless strips or bands of any
40 suitable strong, tough material, textile fabric,
leather, or similar material, which are placed
around the piece A, being of such a width as
to fit within the vertical recesses A', and of
such a thickness as to lie completely within
45 the same and turn freely therein.
C indicates the front portion of the device,
which is provided near its lower end with the
openings C'. Upon the endless bands B are
printed numbers ranging from 0 to 9, the said
50 numbers being of such a size that when broughtopposite the openings C' they will show plainly
through the same.
D G indicate the metal catches, which are
shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5 of the draw-
ings, the rear catch, D, consisting of the up- 55
per loop portion, D', and the downwardly-
projecting side pieces, D", the lower portions
of the said side pieces being inserted through
suitable apertures in the back portion, A, of
the device, their lower extremities being then 6o
bent so as to prevent the catch from slipping
out of position.
G indicates the forward support or catch,
the construction of which will be readily'un-
derstood by reference to the drawings, and 65
which serves as a support for the slips F, upon
which the name of the class of merchandise
contained in the box is stamped.
From the foregoing description, taken in
connection with the accompanying drawings, 7C
the construction of my improved device will
readily be understood without requiring fur-
ther explanation.
It will be seen that by moving the endless
bands any desired price can be indicated on 75
the face of the device, while the slips, contain-
ing the name of the class of goods contained
in the box, can be changed according to the
class of goods placed in the box or drawer.
The loop on the upper part of the rear metal 8c
catch, D, slips over the upper edge of a paper
box, while, when the device is to be used on
a wooden box, or on a drawer, the loop D'
may be bent outward, as shown in dotted lines
in Fig. 3, and the cross-bar of the loop be 85
sharpened, to form an edge adapted to be
driven into the wood of the box or drawer.
The metal catches, each of which is in one
piece only, can be manufactured at a very
small cost. 90
It is obvious that I do not confine myself to
the exact construction of the metal catches, as
they may be made in any substantially simi-
lar form, and yet serve precisely the same pur-
pose. 95
Having thus described my invention, I claim
and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the
'United States-
1. As an improvement in labeling devices or
marking devices, the combination of a frame ico
