UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
JAMES J. FINNEY, OF JUNCTION CITY, TEXAS.
BUGGY-TOP SUPPORT.
PECIFI CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,856, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed September 8, 1885. SerialNo. 176,492. (Model.)I'o all zuwhom it n7uay concern"
Be it known that I, JarMES J. FINNEY, of
Junction City, in the county of Kimble and
State of Texas, have invented a new and Im-
5 proved Buggy-Top Support, of which the fol-
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to supports for the tops
of buggies or other vehicles, and has for its
object to provide a simple, inexpensive, ef-
io fective, and durable device for attachment to
the folding braces of the vehicle-tops to pre-
vent the accidental folding of the top when
the vehicles are on the road.
The invention consists in a buggy-top sup-
15 port comprisinga curved elastic plate fixed at
one end to one section of the folding brace of
the vehicle-top, and having at its other end a
shoulder which locks against the other section
of the brace to hold the brace-sections stiffly
20 in line with each other. The support has an
extension at its shouldered end for a finger-
piece which may be pressed to throw the shoul-
der back from the brace when the top is to be
lowered, all as hereinafter fully described and
25 claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying
drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate
corresponding parts in all the figures.
30 Figure 1 is a side view of part of an ordi-
nary buggy with my improved top-support
applied to it. Fig. 2 is an enlarged'side view
of the support and adjacent portions of the
rear folding brace of the buggy-top. Fig. 3is
35 a front view of the parts shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a side view of the same parts with
the brace partly folded as when raising or low-
ering the buggy-top.
My improved support consists of a curved
40 bar or plate, A, of some elastic metal or ma-
terial, which is fixed at its one end, a, by riv-
ets or screws a', or otherwise, to the upper sec-
tion, b, of the rear diagonally-ranging brace-
bar, B, of the buggy-top, and at its other end,
45 a', the support A has a shoulder, C, formed
by a lug, as at a', at the side face of the bar,
so that as the buggy-top is raised the outerface of the support A will press against the
lower section, b', of the brace-bar B, and when
both the brace-bar sections come into line the 50
shoulders at C of the support A will snap in
front of the brace-bar section b', and prevent
the down-folding of the brace-bar, and thus
support the buggy-top firmly as the vehicle
travels over any ordinary or rough roads. (See 55
Figs. 1, 2, and 3.) The support A has an ex-
tension, as at D, which, when the buggy-top
is raised, projects beyond the brace-bar B to
serve as a finger-piece, which may be pressed
or drawn away from the brace-bar section b' 60
to throw the shoulder C back to allow the
brace B to fold as the buggy-top is lowered.
The support A by holding the back brace, B,
rigidly helps materially to stiffen the upper
folding brace, E, of the buggy-top. 65
It is obvious that the support A is very sim-
ple and effective, and may be applied by any
one to the folding brace-bars of the tops of
either new or old buggies, or other vehicles,
and the support is inexpen,,ive and will last 70
quite as long as the vehicle or its top.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, 75
the buggy-top support A,comprising a curved
plate of elastic material, adapted to be secured
at one end to one section of a folding brace of
the top, and provided with a shoulder, C,
adapted to lock against the other section of 80
the folding brace, substantially as herein set
forth.
2. The combination,with a folding brace of
a buggy or other vehicle top, of the support
A, fixed at one end to one section of the fold- 85
ing brace and provided with a shoulder, C,
adapted to lock against the other section of
the brace, and also having an extension, D,
forming a finger-piece, substantially as herein
set forth.
