UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAIES D. YOUNG, OF ELGIN, TEXAS.
REIN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,462, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed October 3, 1885. Serial No. 178,937. (No model.)
To all wLhons it tcy concern:
Be it known that I, JAMIES D. YOUNG, a
citizen of the United States residing at Elgin,
in the county of Bastrop and State of Texas,
5 have invented certain new and useful Im-
provements in Rein-Holders, of which the fol-
lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to rein-holders, the ob-
ject being to provide a device of this charac-
io ter which will firmly and securely hold the
reins in place and prevent theirforward move-
ment and yet allow them to be readily drawn
in a rearward direction to allow of detachment;
and, further, to provide a rein-holder which
I5 may be readily and easily attached to or de-
tached from the front gate of a wagon or the
dash-board of a buggy.
With these ends in view the invention con-
sists in the improved construction and combi-
20 nations of parts hereinafter fully described
and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective
view showing my device applied. Fig. 2 is a
sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section,
25 and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
Corresponding parts are denoted by the
same letters of reference in the several figures.
Referriig to the drawings, A represents a
standard, which is reduced on its inner side,
30 so that it may be readily attached to the front
gate of a wagon by screws or equivalent fast-
enings. Projecting upwardly from the stand-
ard A is a post, B, which is of less width than
the standard, thus forming shoulders a. The
35 post B is reduced to form shoulders b, and
pivoted to the sides of said post are two
clamps, C, each of which is formed with a
rounded upper end, which allows it to move
in one direction and holds it rigid against
40 movement in the opposite direction. These
clamps are pivoted to the sides of the post B
by a bolt, C', and formed at their lower ends
with lateral projections d, having curved or
convex and serrated bearing-faces d', which
engage the upper sides of the shoulders a. 45
In operation the clamps are swung out and
the lines placed upon the shoulders a, and the
clamps thrown down to hold the reins in
place. If strain is brought to bear upon the
lines from a forward direction, the lines are 50
held more tightly in place; but if the reins are
drawn rearwardly the clamps are drawn out-
wardly, so that the reins may be readily and
easily removed.
It will be apparent that a rein-holder con- 55
structed as above described is of cheap and
simple construction, strong and durable, and
effective in its operation.
I am aware of Patents No. 131,492, dated
September 24, 1872, and No. 48,090, dated 60o
June 6, 1865, and do not seek to claim any-
thing therein shown and described, my in-
vention being limited to the construction
shown and described, whereby an extremely
cheap and simple and at the same time durable 65
rein-holder is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim is-
The combination, with a standard having a
recess or seat to receive the end-board of a 70
wagon, and having oppositely - extending
shoulders located above said seat, of the piv-
oted clamps having the oppositely-extending
lateral projections d, said projections having
serrated engaging faces and having rounded 75
upper ends to fit similarly-shaped recesses in
the standard.
In testimonywhereof I affix mysignature in
presence of two witnesses.
JAMES D. YOUNG.
