UNITED

PATENT OFFICE
HENRY STEPHEN FOUNTAIN, OF MARLIN, TEXAS.
WASH-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,356, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed May 17,1886. Serial No. 202,373. (No model.)To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STEPHEN FOTUN-
TAIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-
dent of Marlin, in the county of Falls and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I dohere-
by declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, which
will enable others skilled in the art to which
To it appertains to make and use the same, refer-
ence being had to the accom panying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, and in
which-
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my
15 improved wash-boiler. Fig. 2 isa top viewof
the same with the cover removed, and Fig. 3
is a horizontal sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-
sponding parts in all the figures.
20 My invention has relation to that class of
wash-boilers in which water is boiled in a
lower compartment and forced through pipes
up into the clothes; and it consists in the im-
proved construction and combination of parts
25 of such a boiler, as hereinafter more fully de-
scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A
indicates a cylindrical casing, which is pro-
vided near its bottom with a partition, B, hav-
30 ing a central screw-threaded neck, C, and a
series of perforations, L, around its outer edge.
The lower female-threaded end of a tube, D,
fits upon this neck and is formed with a closed
upper end and with a series of perforations,
35 and perforated tubes E, triangular in section,
are secured to the inner sides of the cylinder
at intervals, having stoppers F in their upper
ends, the lower ends of saidtubes covering'the
perforations L around its outer end.
4o The boiler is provided with a removable
cover, G, and with suitable ears or handles, H,
and a rack, I, consisting of rings J J, con-
nected at their upper edges by cross-pieces K,
is placed in the bottom of the boiler, resting
45 upon the partition.
When the lower compartment has been filled
with water, the clothes may be placed upon therack in the bottom of the boiler, and when the
water is brought to boil the steam will pass
up through the perforated central tube and 50
through the side tubes, penetrating the clothes,
which will be perfectly boiled, and which may
rest perfectly free from all sediment, as the
rack raises the clothes above the bottom.
After passing through the clothes down into S5
the rack I the water passes through the lower
holes in the central and side tubes back into
the chamber below, leaving the dirt and sedi-
ment in the rack, thus avoiding the objection
of throwing the dirt back upon the clothes 6o
after it has once been removed, as would be
the case if there were holes in the partition
below the rack, instead of in the tubes at a
distance from the bottom.
The perforated central tube may be removed 65
for filling the lower compartment, or for the
purpose of cleaning either the compartment
or the tube, and the triangular tubes upon the
sides of the boiler may be cleaned by remov-
ing the stoppers and passing a suitable rod 70
down through them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim
and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the
United States-
In a wash-boiler, the combination of a boiler 75
having a partition at its lower end slightly
above the bottom formed with a screw-threaded
neck at its center, a perforated tube fitting
with its lower end upon the neck and having
its upper end closed, and a number of per- 80o
forated triangular tubes upon the side of the
boiler provided with stoppers at their upper
ends and extending from the partition in the
lower end of the boiler, and a rack consisting
of rings connected at their upper edges by 85
cross-pieces, as and for the purpose shown and
set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereunto affixed my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY STEPHEN FOUNTAIN.
