UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. McNABB, OF BOONSVILLE, TEXAS.
LIFTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,366, dated Novembe: 30, 1886.
Application filed July 12, 1886. Serial No. 207,81I. (No model.)To all w7hoon it nmc'y concerM:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. MOAcNBB, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Boons-
ville, inthe county of Wiseand State of Texas,
5 have invented a new and useful Improvement
in Lifting Devices, of which the following is
a specification.
My invention relates to devices for raising
fence-corners in repairing the same, and for
to lifting weights generally; and the object of
my invention is to produce a simple and pow-
erful device whereby a single operator can
greatly increase his capacity for lifting heavy
objects.
15 To the above purposes my invention consists
in certain peculiar and novel features of con-
struction and arrangement, as hereinafter de-
scribed and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully un-
20 derstood, I will proceed to describe it with
reference to the accompanying drawings, in
which-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved
weight-lifter. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the
25 same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof,partly
broken away and in section to show detailsof
construction.
In the said drawings, A A' designate two
heavy pieces of timber, which are inclined to-
30 ward each other, and the upper ends of which
are connected by a stout metallic strap, B,
the ends of said strap being lapped over the
tops of timbers A,and bolted thereto,as shown
at b. The timbers A A'are braced apart, near
35 their lower ends, by a strap, c.
D designates a curved rack-bar; which is se-
cured at its upper end by a bolt, d, to the
strap b, and at its lower end by a bolt, d', to
the strap c. The teeth d' of this bar are upon
40 one of its edges, as shown.
e designates a rock-shaft,which is journaled
in platesf, set in the upper part of the inner
sides of timbers a a'. A hand-lev.er,F,is con-
nected to the rock-shaft e by means of a pivot-
45 bolt, e', which passes through the lever and is
secured in the said shaft e, and the lever is
capable of vertical movement with the shaft,to adapt it to raise and lower heavy objects,
and of a lateral movement on its pivot-bolt,
so that it can be connected to and disengaged 5c
from the vertical rack-bar D. The short end
of lever F is provided with a U-shaped metal
piece, f', to which a chain, f', is attached,the
said chain serving as the -means for attaching
the object to be lifted to thelifting-lever. The 55
long arm of lever F carries a plate,G,the pro-
jecting edge g of which engages the ratchet-
teeth d'of bar D, and thus holds the lever F in
any desired position.
The device as thus constructed is partic- .o
ularly adapted for raising the corners of fences
for repairs, but is also capable of lifting various
heavy weights. By the addition of suitable
front braces the supports A A' may be made
self-sustaining, so that the device may be used 65
for holding carcasses to be dressed, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by
Letters Patent, is-
In a lifting-jack, the combination of the in- 70
clined uprights or standards, the straps se-
cured to the standards at the upper ends and
middle thereof, to connect the same together,
the vertical rack-bar secured at its ends to the
said straps, the rock-shaft journaled in the up- 75
rights, the lever arranged on one side on the
rack-bar, and pivoted on the rock-shaft by
transverse pivot bolt e', and capable of a ver-
tical movement on the shaft and a lateral
movement on the pivot-bolt, the plate carried 80
by the lever and projecting beyond one side
thereof to engage the teeth of the rack-bar,
and a chain connected to the shorter end of
the lever, substantially as described, for the
purpose set forth. 85
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
presence of two witnesses.
