UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW THOMAS BYRNE, OF COLORADO, TEXAS.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,742, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed arch 16, 1887. Serial No. 131.173. (No model.)fTo all woo7, it n?,ay concern:
Be it known that I, MIATTEW THOMAs
BYRNE, of Colorado, in the county of Mitchell
and State of Texas, have invented certain Im-
5 provements in Door-Checks, of which the fol-
lowing is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a
means for preventing the jarring and noise
incident to the sudden stoppage of a door or
to window-blind in closing, especially when the
said door or blind is subjected to the impulse
of a spring or other actuating means; and to
this end it consists of a hinge having one leaf
provided with a case or box extending later-
15 ally from the back thereof, the said case or
box inclosing a spring - actuated bolt which
normally projects beyond the point of the leaf,
and is arranged to engage with the other leaf
of the hinge when the door is closed.
20 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
a perspective view of the device in a partially
open position. Fig. 2 is a partially sectional
view of the same in the closed position.
The hinge A may be of any suitable con-
25 struction, and serves as one of the supporting-
hinges of the door or blind. One leaf of the
hinge is provided with a laterally-projecting.
and preferably cylindrical case or box, B,
formed on or secured to the back of the said
30 hinge-leaf, and when the hinge is in use the
case is seated in the door-jamb or window-
casing, or, if preferred, in the door or window-
blind.
The case B contains a sliding bolt, C, be-
35 tween the end of which and the end of the case
is interposed a spring, D, and the said bolt is
reduced in diameter at one end, F, which re-
duced portion projects through and normally
beyond the face of the hinge-leaf. The pro-
40 jection of the portion F of the bolt C is lim-
ited by the larger portion of the same abut-
ting against the hinge-leaf.The hinge, with the check formed by the
spring-actuated bolt, may be used in place of
both the upper and lower hinges of a door, 45
and when so applied and the door moved to
the closed position the projecting end of each
bolt will engage with the opposing leaf of the
hinge before the door is entirely closed, and
be forced into the casing. The further move- 50
ment of the door will be resisted and retarded
by the springs to such an extent that the door
will slowly approach the closed position until
the latch catches without the jarring and noise
incident to a sudden stoppage of the door. 55
I may use but one check to a door, or I may
use two or more, according to the weight of
the door, the strength of the check-spring,and
the strength of the closing-spring of the door,
if one be used. 6o
It is evident that the bolt may be of one
size throughout and a transverse pin be used
to limit its projection from the face of the
hinge leaf, and that instead of a case a bracket
or other retaining means may be used as a 65
holder for the bolt and spring.
Having thus described my invention,whatI
claim is--
The combination, with a hinge, of a case se-
cured to one leaf thereof, and a longitudinally- 70
movable spring - actuated bolt contained in
said case and having one end projecting
through and normally beyond the said leaf,
substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my 75
hand, this 15th day of February, 1887, in the
presence of two attestng witnesses.
MATTHEW THOMAS BYRNE.
