UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
CHARLES VALENTINE DYER, OF CONROE, TEXAS.
PLOW-CLEANING ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,408, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed February 8, 1890, Serial No, 339,686, (No model,)fTo all zvhonm it mn ay concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES VALENTINE
DYER, a citizen of the United States of Amer-
ica, residing at Conroe, in the county of Mont-
5 gomery and State of Texas, have invented cer-
tain new and useful Improvements in Plow-
Cleaning Attachments; and I do hereby de-
clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact
description of the invention, such as will en-
i0 able others skilled in the art to which it ap-
pertains to make and use the same, reference
being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to letters of reference marked thereon, which
form a part of this specification.
i5 This invention relates to attachments for
plows, designed to keep the mold-board clean;
and it consists in the improvements herein-
after described and set forth, whereby the
soil is automatically prevented from adher-
20 ing to said mold-board.
In the accompanying drawings, forming
part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per-
spective view of a plow embodying my im-
provements, and Fig. 2 is a section of the
25 same on the dotted line x X.
The beam A of the plow carries at its rear
end the standard B, the lower portion of which,
together with a horizontal rearward exten-
sion, forms the landside of the plow. The
30 beam carries on its upper side a box a, in
which bears one end of a transverse roller b,
the outer journal of which is seated in the
upper end of an inclined bar C. A trans-
verse brace d is seated at one end in a recess
35 therefor in the front of the standard, while
the other end bears in the bar C. A lower
roller e bears in the standard and lower end
of said bar. A transverse brace f is also
seated in the standard and outer bar.
40 The mold-board proper consists of three
pieces g h i, which are secured on the lower
and upper braces d f, so as to leave longi-
tudinal spaces or slots between the same. A
separate lower section D carries the point
45 and edge of the plow, and said section car-
ries on its under side a perforated lug j,
through which a bolt passes to secure the sec-
tion D to the bar C, so that the upper edge of
said section will set out from the mold-board
50 sections in order toleave a space between the
opposite edge resting on a raised portion j' ofthe standard B. Two endless belts Ic 1 pass
around the upper and lower rollers, and are
connected transversely by blades or scrapers
7m, which have curved front edges and are 55
attached to the straps in line with the slots
between the sections of the mold-board.
The hanger E depends from the beam near
its front.end, and has a colter-wheel cm' hung
therein, the outer journal o of which pro- 6o
jects for the attachment thereto of a pulley
p), geared by a belt with a corresponding pul-
ley q on the projecting end of the upper roller.
In operation the colter imparts a rotary
motionto the upper roller to cause the scraper- 6=
belts to travel. Each scraper passes down
closely over the mold-board, its connections
with the belts moving along the slots. As
the scraper moves as stated its curved edge
cuts and dislodges the earth adhering to the 70
mold-board, and the said scraper finallypasses
from the mold-board beneath the section D
and turns with the belts around the lower
roller and again comes into position at the
top of the mold-board. 75
While I have represented three scrapers,
as many may be employed as may be found
desirable.
The device is particularly serviceable in
plowing in the black viscous soil common to 8o
certain localities.
Atransverse plate S is pivotally connected
to the upper edge of the front section, to pro-
vide for a limited movement when the scrapers
pass beneath the same. 85
I claim-
1. The combination, with the stationary
mold-board of a plow, of lower and upper
transverse rollers, belts passing around the
same, carrying scrapers adapted to pass over 90
said niold-boards, and means for operating
said belts, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the mold-board
of a plow, having parallel longitudinal slots,
as described, of upper and lower rollers, belts 95
passing around the same beneath the mold-
board, scrapers connected to said belts in line
with the slots and adapted to pass over said
mold-board, and means for rotating said belts,
substantially as set forth. moo
3. The combination, with the mold-board
of a plow, longitudinally slotted, as described,
