UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES JOHN MORRISON, OF FLOYD, TEXAS.
VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,181, dated November 11, 1890.
Application fled August 23, 1889, Serial No, 321,738. (No model,)To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES JOHN MORRISON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Floyd, in the county of Hunt and State of
5 Texas, have invented a new and useful Valve,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to valves for
use in steam-boilers, stand-pipes, and water-
works; and among the objects in view are
io to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient valve
so constructed as to cut off the supply of water
upon the outside of the induction-port and
to drain all water from the valve-body and
the connecting-pipes above the same, thereby
15 preventing freezing of the same and a conse-
quent bursting.
With these general objects in view the in-
vention consists in certain novel features of
construction hereinafter specified, and par-
20 ticularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a
perspective of the valve in detail; Fig. 2, a
longitudinal section of the same, showing it
secured in the wall of a boiler; Fig. 3, a
25 transverse section on line x x, Fig. 2; Figs.
4 and 5, details of the valve-collar and sec-
ondary valve-plug.
Like numerals of reference indicate like
parts in all the figures of the drawings.
30 1 represents a preferably cylindrical valve-
body provided with an internal bore extend-
ing from one end to near the opposite end.
At each side of the body and communicating
with the interior bore are eduction-ports 2,
35 and at the closed end of the body and ex-
tending therefrom is a perforated lug 3, the
perforation of which communicates with the
internal bore of the body. The lug 3 is in-
teriorly threaded, and in the same is mounted
40 for reciprocation the valve-stem 4, which
passes through the internal bore and projects
beyond the opposite end of the valve-body.
Within the valve-body and fitting the bore
thereof and mounted upon the valve-stem is
45 a diaphram or secondary valve 5, said dia-
phragm being perforated at its center, as at
6, and provided with opposite slots 7.
8 represents a valve-collar or bushing
threaded in the lower or open end of the valve-
50 body and having projecting outwardly there-
from an annular valve-seat 9, the exterior of
which is of less diameter than that of thebushing, and the opening forming the seat is
smaller than the internal bore of the valve-
body and through said opening passes a valve- 55
stem 4. The bushing is provided with a
series of minute perforations which commu-
nicate with the interior of the valve.
12 represents a conical valve-plug mounted
on the end of the valve-stem and operating 6o
within the seat 9.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
By opening the valve-plug through the me-
dium of its stem, water passes through the
valve-seat into the valve-body and out 65
through the eduction-ports and pipes con-
nected therewith. When the valve is open,
it will be noticed that the perimeter of the
secondary valve will be forced against the
minute openings in the bushing and water 70
prevented from escaping through the open-
ing. By a reverse movement of the stem, so
as to bring the plug to its seat and cut off the
supply of water, the secondary-valve will be
withdrawn from over the openings and the 75
water contained in the valve-body will drip
through the minute openings of the bushing,
and thus said body be thoroughly drained
and a freezing of the valve by reason of water
contained therein cannot occur. 80
Employing the valve in connection with a
boiler, the exterior of the valve-seat is prefer-
ably threaded to coact with a similarly-formed
perforation in the boiler, said valve-seat ex-
tending through the shell of the same and into 85
the interior of the boiler.
It is obvious that the pipe-connections are
to be provided with valves or stop-cocks which
are to be closed when the valve 12 is brought
to its seat. 90
Having described my invention, what I
claim is-
1. The valve casing or body having oppo-
sitely-located ports 2 2 and provided with a
perforated interiorly-threaded lug or projec- 95
tion 3, in combination with the flanged bush-
ing seated in said valve-casing and having a
valve-seat at its outer end, and perforations
extending through the flange and the valve-
stem provided with a perforated diaphragm ioo
located within the valve-casing and having a
valve-plug at its outer end, substantially as
set forth.
2. The combination of the valve-casing havy
