UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SIDNEY TURPEN, OF WEATIIERFORD, TEXAS.
WASHIN G - MAC H INE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent ]No. 469,612, dated February 23,1899.
Application filed August 26,1891. Aerial No, 403,763, (No model,)To aUll whom it 7nay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SIDNEY TURPEN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident
of Weatherford, in the county of Parker and
5 State of Texas, have invented certain new and
useful Improvements in Washing-Machines;
andI do hereby declare thatthefollowing is a
full, clear, and exact description of the inven-
tion, which will enable others skilled in the
to art to which it appertains to make and use the
same, reference being had to the accompany-
ing drawings, which form a part of this speci-
tication.
Mly invention relates to improvements in
15 washing-machines, the object being to pro-
vide a machine of this character which shall
be simple and economical in construction and
reliable and efficient in use.
The invention consists in the novel con-
20 struction and combination of parts hereinaf-
ter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
a central longitudinal section of a washing-
machine constructed in accordance with my
25 invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral
1 designates a suds-box, preferably rectangu-
lar in form, although it may be made in any
other shape found convenient or desirable.
30 The numeral 2 denotes the bed upon which
the clothes are supported, and which is capa-
ble of being reciprocated back and forth in
the suds-box. This bed consists of anumber
of transverse wooden cylinders or bars con-
35 nected together at the ends by means of hori-
zontal bars 2a. These bars are made slightly
tapering from each end toward the center, so
as to form spaces 3, which serve as passage-
ways for the water and the dirt removed from
40 the clothes. At each end the bed is provided
with upwardly-extending guards 4, which pre-
vent the clothes from falling off the bed, and
on the under side at one end are rollers 5,which run upon longitudinal bars 6, con-
nected together by transverse bars 9, which 45
rest upon the bottom of the suds-box. These
bars, however, may be dispensed with, if de-
sired, and the rollers rest directly upon the
suds-box bottom. To the guard at the oppo-
site end of the bed is pivoted alever consisting 50
of the side bars 7 and transverse bars 8 and S.
The bar S is provided with journals 8S, which
project through the side bars and have their
bearings in slots 10 in the edges of the sides of
thesuds-box. The rubber, between which and 55
the bed the clothes to be washed are held,
consists of side plates 12, in which are jour-
naled rollers 13. The side plates are connected
with the side bars 7 of the lever by means of
rods 14. 6o
The operation is as follows: A suitable
quantity of suds is placed in the suds-box and
the clothes to be washed are placed upon the
bed. By now working the lever back and
forth the clothes will be rubbed between the 65
rubber and bed and the dirt removed in a
rapid and efficient manner.
Having thus described myinvention, what I
claim is-
A washing-machine comprising a suds-box, 70
the bed consisting of the transverse cylinders
connected together, the upwardly-projecting
guards at each end, the rollers journaled at
one end of the bed, the lever pivoted at the
other end thereof and to the suds-box, the 75
rubber consisting of the side plates and the
roller journaled therein, and the rods connect-
ing said rubber to the lever, substantially as
described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 80
my own I have hereunto affixed my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE SIDNEY TURPEN.
