UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. WHEELER, OF MACY, TEXAS.
VINE- CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,322, dated March 14, 1893.
Application filed October 28, 1892. Serial No, 450,294, (No model. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. WHEELER, a I
citizen of the United States, residing at Macy,
in the county of Brazos and State of Texas,
5 have invented a new and useful Vine-Cutter,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vine cutters, and
has for its object to simplify the construct ion
of devices of this character by means of an
io integral formation of the cutter, and with
this object in view the invention consists of
the construction and arrangement of the parts
as will be hereinafter more fully described
and claimed.
15 In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective
view of a plow-frame showing the improved
device applied in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device as
shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspec-
20 tive view of the improved device detached.
Similar numerals of reference designate cor-
responding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1
designates the plow-beam, having handles 2,
25 and a depending post or standard 3. To the
lower portion of the post or standard 3 is
secured the improved cutter 4, which con-
sists of a pair of hitting knives or shares 5,
which are slightly divergent and are inte-
30 grally connected by a front cross-piece 6, with
a central opening 7 therein for the passage
therethrough of the securing -bolt. The
lower edges of the cutting knives or shares
are sharpened, as at 8, and the rear ends are
35 curved upward, as at 9, through which the
sharpened portion is continued, and said cut-
ting knives or shares are given a slight con-
cavo-convex formation in the direction of
their width in order to provide for a more
40 perfect draw-cut. Adjacent to the opposite
terminations of the cross-piece 6, the cutting
knives or shares are formed with blunt lower
edges 10 and are decreased in width, because
at this point the formation of the cutting
45 edge is unnecessary in view of the fact that
it lies against the opposite sides of the post
or standard.
In applying the improved cutting device
to the post or standard of the plow-frame,
50 the cross-piece 6 is placed over the front edge
or side of the lower portion of said stand-
ard and a single securing-bolt 11 passed there-
through, this being the only means of se-
curement necessary in view of the opposite
55 inner opposing sides of the cutting knives orshares bearing against the opposite edges of
the said post or standard. This arrange-
ment prevents loose movement of the cut-
ting attachmentin any direction and provides
for ready engagement and disengagement 60o
of the said device with or from the post or
standard.
A further important advantage gained by
the construction set forth resides in the re-
siliency supplied to the cutting knives or 65
shares through the medium of their integral
connection with the cross-piece 6, and per-
mitting them to have slight lateral move-
ment to freely pass over obstructions, if the
latter exist, without danger of breaking or 70
straining the said cutting knives or shares.
It will be seen that the cutting knives or
shares are so arranged as to simultaneously
cut the vines on both sides of a row and
save considerable labor and time by the dou- 75
ble operation.
The device may be constructed of suitable
metal of a proper grade of temper or degree
of hardness, and after it has been used in the
manner stated a following plow can be em- 80
ployed to advantage in the furrows between
the rows for covering the vines.
The construction set forth is comparatively
inexpensive in manufacture, easily and read-
ily applied, and forms a useful and conven- 85
lent acquisition to agricultural implements.
Having described the invention, what I
claim as new is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a
vine-cutting attachment adapted to be ap- 90
plied to a plow standard or foot consisting of
a pair of cutting knives or shares integrally
connected by a front cross-piece with a sin-
gle central opening therein for the passage
therethrough of a single securing bolt, the 95
knives being rearwardly divergent and ob-
liquely arranged at a downward angle, the
lower edges of said knives or shares being
sharpened and their rear ends curved up-
wardly, the said lower edges of the knives or 1oo
shares adjacent to the said cross-piece being
formed blunt, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
the presence of two witnesses.
