UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT GRANT ANDERSON, OF KERRVILLE, TEXAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,665, dated April 4, 1893.
ApplicationfiledJanuary 11, 1893. Serial No. 458,073. (No model.)To cal whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, ALBERT GRANT ANDER-
SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at
Kerrville, in the county of Kerr and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I
do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as
will enable others skilled inthe art towhich it
io appertains to make and use the same, refer-
ence being had to the accompanying draw-
ings, and to the letters of reference marked
thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and
15 useful improvements in washing machines of
that class in which is employed a rotary agita-
tor or dasher with blades, and it has for its ob-
jectsamong others to provide an improved con-
struction whereby better results are attained,
20 the construction simplified and made cheaper,
less liable to become inoperative or injured
and easier to operate. I provide a cover a por-
tion of which is hinged and carries the oper-
ating parts so that the whole may be thrown up
25 when desired to gain access to the tub. The
supporting standard is of novel construction,
having a guide for the toothed segment and a
pair of lugs in which is pivoted the connecting
portion of the segment. The operating seg-
30 ment is arranged horizontally whereby it is
more easily operated and greater power ob-
tained.
Other objects and advantages of the inven-
tion will hereinafter appear and the novel
35 features thereof will be specifically defined
by the appended claim.
The invention in the present instance re-
sides in the peculiar combinations, and the
construction, arrangement and adaptation of
40 parts all as more fully hereinafter described,
shown in the drawings and then particularly
pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the
accompanying drawings, which, with the let-
45 ters of reference marked thereon, form a part
of this specification and in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im-
proved washing machine with the cover down.
Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
50o Like letters of reference indicate like parts
in both of the views.
Referring now to the details of the draw-ings by letter, A designates a tub or recepta-
cle of known construction within which at a
suitable distance from the top is secured the 55
annular flange or ring B.
C is a portion designed to be secured within
the upper end of the tub in any suitable man-
ner and resting upon the said flange or ring.
To this portion is hinged as by the hinges a 6o
the remaining portion D of the top or cover
or support as shown and upon this latter por-
tion are supported the operating parts of the
machine. These consist of the centrally lo-
cated socket or casting E which has a lug or 65
lugs c through which pass the securing means
to affix it to the portion D and through this
socket or casting passes the shaft F the upper
end of which is journaled in the arm G and
the lower end of which carries theagitatoror 70
beater G' which may be of any suitable or
well known construction, being preferably
adjustably mounted upon the shaft as seen.
The arm G is arched as shown and the lower
ends of the arch secured to the portion D, the 75
said arm being provided with athird member
G2 which is arched and arranged at right an-
gles to and connecting with the main portion
of the arm, its lower end being secured to the
portion D as shown. This third member is 8o
formed upon one side ivith the lugs or ears or
horizontal portions g between which is piv-
oted the portion h of the segment H which
segment is toothed upon its outer face as
shown and is designed to mesh with a gear 85
wheel I on the shaft F. The connecting por-
tion h of this segment is extended at both
ends or one end to form handles or a handle
h' by which it is moved upon its pivot. Upon
the side of the third member of the arm G 90
opposite the portions g are the like ears or
lugs j between which the segmental portion
of the segment II works and by which the said
segment is guided.
The operation will be readily understood 95
from the foregoing description when taken in
connection with the annexed drawings and a
further detailed description thereof is not
deemed necessary.
It is deemed important that the operating ioo
segment be arranged horizontally whereby
space is economized and greater power is ob-
tained and at the same time rendering the
machine more easily operated. The guiding
