men who have recently moved
to Caldwell to make their homes,
were invited guests. i
Arrangements of purple delphin-
ium and Queen Anne's Luce were

the club room. The luncheon was
served buffet style.
Immediately after lunch the
;.resident, Mrs. A. V Lofton, called

session. Annua 1 reports wero
heard from the officers and the
various committee chairmen. The
Federation Counselor reported
that Texas Clubwomen ranked
third in the "Help For Korea"
campaign conducted the past year.
A rising vote of thanks was
tendered Mrs. John N. Thornto i,
who recently presented two sec-i
tioiis of a bookcase to the library.
The gift was yery much appre-
ciated by the club. Ten dollai ■

The governor stated that it had
proved refreshing to him to have
tiie opportunity to visit the peo-
ple of Texas in their homes and
on their farms in every section
of the broad expanse of the great
slate. "I believe that it is good
to bring a little bit of our go?-
• "ument to the people in their
own back yards and let them sec
what kind of people they have
running their business for them."
In bringing government close to
the people tha governor believes
that they will better understand
the problems facing government
because "th® people will alwaya
have the best government they
demand and the worst they will
tolerate."

Edward A. Varner, having
served Burleson County for the
past two terms in a highly effi-
cient and capable manner, made
announcement through the col-
umns of the NEWS this week
that he will be a candidate for
re-election to the office of County
Tax Assessor and Collector and
asks his friends antí neighbors to
support and vote f„r him. Mi.
Varner, a young and vigorous
county official, has installed a
modern, up-to-the minute system
of recordings and of filings in his
office, which has drawn consider-
able favorable comment from visit-
ing county tax collectors who
have come to inspect his system.
After having been elected to
the position he now holds back in
1947, Mr. Varner, before taking
office, made an intensive study
of systems employed by counties
in many sections of the state and
installed the best parts of them
here. As n result he entered the
office on a sound footing and hus
improved steadily as the yours
have passed along. It is with
pleasure today that this news-
paper publishes Mr. Varner's own
statement to the people;

Studhalter Sr., 92, retired farmer,
who died at his homo near Somer-
ulle at 10:45 Monday evening,
were h*ld from thefamily resi-
dence at 2 o'clock Wednesday af-
ternoon. Rev. c. A. Ray of Son.,
etville officiated at the service.
The deceased was born in
Switzerland February 24, 18C0
and came to this country about
iM78 and settled in Texas. Ten
years later he wis maried to Min
Magdalene Urban and the couple
resided on a farm near ( ay Hill
for fifty years. Eight children
wero born to this union, two of
whom have preceded thoir father
in doath. His wife passed away
in 1938.
Mr. Studhalter aad his daugh-
ter, Mian Rana Kadhaltoc have
lived near SoiaervMe for about
