Born Mazzara del Vallo, Sicily, 1920. Studied art in Palermo, then went to Rome in 1944
with the Allied Forces. In Paris, 1946, founded together with a group of friends the non-
representational Forma movement, 1947, typical of post-war Italy. Replied in 1952 to
Arturo Martini's contention that sculpture was dead with an essay on the necessity for
sculpture. Exhibited: Venice Biennale 1950, 1954, 1956; Sao Paulo 1955 and 1959. First
one-man show abroad: Brussels 1958, then Paris 1959. Showed at Kassel II Documenta and
won 1960 top Venice Biennale Prize. Lives and works in Rome.
