We are not authorised to ttte—which
exhibits in strong language, but ne
stronger than true, the sentiments
w« believe of thousands, whose
voices, ere ' long combined, will be
heard above the din of battle, ringing
like a mighty cataract in the ears of
this wicked Administration. He
says :
"As it regards men and measures,
depend on it, the people are light.
They are against this wicked Admin-
istration and heartily Bick of its
shoddy war, If a vote could be
taken on the war question to-morrow
it would be to stop it forthwith. You
know my views, dear sir. They
are as unalterablo as the principles
upon which this Government was.
founded. I see this Government
going to ruin in the hands of bad
men. Whilst'the war lasts they
will find means to accomplish the
wprst of purposes. The war is the
prolific source of all the evils which
afflict lliis poor distracted country.
It must be stopped somehow or our
liberties will he swept away and lost
forever. It is no longer a <¡Ucstion
whether the Southern Stetes can be
got back, but whether the North can
be saved.
"It is not Southern lebellion (if
that is the word) that is going to
hill us, but Northern despotism forc-
ed on us by the usurpers at Washing-
ton. With their tráin-bands, but
little better now than Pnetoriaii
ÍSunrds, they Beek to rob us of our
birthright. The pretence is that the
Government is in da'nger, and to save
ihat the free spoken aud the restless
may be shackled. Audacious men 1
The (Government is in no danger
except from those who assume to be
giving it their support. What they
are 6 Per is another form, of govern-
ment, and the recent debates in Con-
gress go far towards sustaining this
view pf the caBe. Democrats by en-
dorsing the "vigorous prosecution"
policy in reality help Lincoln and his
guilty advisers to pull down the tem-
ple of constitutional liberty. Mean-
while, what is the condition ..of the
people 1 made poore r every dáy by
the acts'of this God-abhorred Admin-
istration. If they go for peace they
may be saved from utter rain; if they
blink the question they may be lost
This is no party question, it is a
question, f right, justice and human-
ity—of all that ig solid and Valnable
against the world, the flesh and the
¿•«vil. Very truly," &«.
Such are views now held by
prominent, men m the North, and their
núttfber is constantly increasing. We
cárnM permit ourselves to doubt
that ere long, these opinions will be
the opinions of the entire North.
Whatever may be gained by wár,
must result in destroying our Govern-
(u it was. In peace only, is
there any hope for our old Odnstitu
