secreted on each side of the road,
only three miles from Richmond,
eud the disaster that followed the
uext day is too well known to oil.
Amonj his papers was a pass from
Hopkins, the Provost Mvrshal of
Austin, Texas, to Beauregard's army
also a letter front Col. Clurk to Gen.
VanDorn, recommending him as re-
liable under all circumstances in
which it proves that tbey were no'
mistaken in their mun, for be has
proved himself to be as hart lesa n
traitor and villain as they represent
him to be ; and i/ caught, he had a
thousand lives to give the gallows, he
could not atone for the awful crime
he is guilty of. The papers are in
the hands of Geu. Wright. Lient.
Blair is in priBou, uwating trial by
court-martial. Officers have gone
in pursuit of Lount, hut there is little
hope of overhauling hiui, as he war
reported by a coutrubund who canu-
ta to-day twenty five miles from
here, well mounted with a double-
barreled gun, and nccoumpauied by
two others, also well mounted and
aimed, going iu the direction of the
rebel army, there io plot some other
plan of treason. We have been thus
minuli, as '.he afi'air has created so
buch excitement in the city. The
meu soen with hiiniu Kentucky, were
doubtless the Confederates, and met
him by agreement on the bank of the
river. "

sau Herald says:
Notwithstanding the fact that the
great European Powers still with-
hold the political, recognition of tht'
Southern States of America, in every
other respect tbey are fast receiving
the justice due them. Socially tbey
have oeen long recognized by the
civil aud revenue regulations of all
couutries, their commercial status is
universally acknowledged upon the
same basis as an iudependent power
(by being recognised belligerents,)
and we see by the last number of
Marryatt'e naval signals of 1864,
received in Nassau, that their differ-
ent standards are ongraved and dis-
played iu that work along with those
of other indepeudeut powers, as en-
titled to respect aud recoguition.
This latter fact also embraces the
privilege of insurance and the mara
lime rights cousequeut thereunto.
Never was the" tiue old maxim
bat 'revolutions never go backwards,'
better illustrated than in ¿lie case of
the Southern Coutederscy. Tbeir
credit aud commercial relations long
ago estúblished abroad, is developing
its effect. Altec all, commerce is
tiie, great king, and as we see its
various departments -wheeli g into
line, one alter auother, admitting the
indisputable existauceof a nation, it
will not be long before the bauds of
j^d tape will rot out, and the polic-
ial schemers give way to the triump-
hant inarch ol Truth and Justice.
The Cotif. deracy has had two bat-
tles—one witli her enemies, another
with her friends. We hope before
many months pass, the latter will be
v\ on, and that accomplished, th
history ol tin paf t three \ ears guaran-
tees the aucccsstni reouli of the for-
mer.

—We notice that the sales of land's
of alien enemies, sequestered by tbe
Oonfedoracy i.- still being carried on
whether by the wish of Receivers or
the counts, is not known. This
wliole thing should be stopped un-
til after the war. While our armies-
are iu the field; while tbu President
and the Governors are calling for
more'men ; and while every man is
urged farward to the battle it is
passing strange that a few people
remaining at home should urge the
sacrifice of this property. It does
swem that our brave soldiers should
have an opportunity of securing
homes for themselves and families.
Rut it appears that this does not
suit the stay at homes. They must
amass fortunes while the soldier
must come home worse than when
be w$mt in, and deprived of all
chance to púnchate from his govern-
ment a home for his children. The
newspapers have been urging the
sales of these lands; Speculators urge
the balas; men with pockets full of
confederate money urge the sales.
The ostensible object is to teke up
tbe surplus of Confederate notes in
circulatíón; the real qbject is doubt-
less W buy where there is little or
no competition and no body to com-
peté with the stay at homos.
