I 1800-41; be took a proninent
part >> the exoitine events of that
ponod, was ^ member of the Secess
ion Convention, and of the Commit-
tee of Safety. When the war broke
out he entered at once into the spirit
of it, and raised one of the finest reg-
intenta that ever left the State, the
Seventh Infantry. The history of
that regiment is familiar to our read'
«a. It wju captured at JPt, Donelson,
lay in Yankee prisons unfil exebnged
under the cartel of 62, became n part
of the Mississippi Army, when Colo.
Gregg was promoted to be Brigadier,
and last winter placed in comand of
the lit; 4th and 5th the well known
Texas Bngade in Virginia, then
however a part of Longstreet's army
in East Tennessee.
__ As a- soldier General Gregg was
distinguished for courage, coolness,
and for his tact in gaining the good
will of his men. Never urgent of his
own claims, his promotion was slow,
as it was based an merir, it was a
matter of pride to his frinds.—Since
he has Uen in command of the Old
Brigade be has led its thin but
unconquerable ranks in some of the
moat terrible encounters'of the war,
but always with success.
In one of these charges for which
it has been so famous, he fel\
evidently in the hour of victory, and
died another sacrifice on the aftar of
free government.
Gen. Gregg was still a young
man—not over 39 when he fell, ac-
cording to the best of our information.
Had he lived, his reputation would
have been more solid thouge possi-
bly lesa brilliant than that of a ma-
jority of his compeers. Texas fo-
ments his death and will cherish his
Thk Situation at Petersburg.
—The Yankees have shown no fur-
ther disposition to ndvanco their line
in the direction of the Southside
railroad since their failure on Thurs-
day.
The usual cannonading, now of
almost daily occurrence continue.
Some few shots—fifteei) inch-mor-
tars—loaded with pieces of thick
glass, brass, capper, iron and lead,
were thrown into the city, but no
damage was done.
On Friday a portion of the enemy's
skirmishers line in front of Wilcox's
division, on our right, was surprised
and eighty-eight prisoners, including
one commissioned officer, were taken.
The prisoners are mostly from the
First and Second Maryland regi-
ments.
Parties form City Point report
great activity there, An immense
wharf lias been erected by Grant's
orders, extending from the old steam-
boat landing on James river, around
up the Appomattox for a half mile
or more, commissary, otdinance and
quartermaster depots, over three
hundred feet in length, have been,
constructed, and sutlers' shanties in
numerable, have sprung up on every
hand,
General Grant has his wife stay-
ing with him now. The former
superb residence of Dr. Epes has
been renovated and repaired, and
General Grant and Mrs. Grant and
sundry little Grants are now snugly
ensconced therein.
The usual amount of outrages by
Grant's men are reported. All through
the country the cinzens have suffer-
ed all the insults and outrages that
could be inflicted on n conquered
people by lawless bands of Yankees
and runaway negroes who plunder
ienult and rob at their pleasure.
