Southern and Texlan Progress
•While for Several years steady progression has
gone ón, the last few months have accomplished
much to accelerate a grand desideratum for New
wllans, Texas and the whole Southwest—regular
steam communication along the gulf, connecting
all the important points from New Orleans to the
isthmus of Central America, stimulating and invi-
ting a splendid trade which has heretofore gone
to Europe or the North—a trade as legitimately
belonging to our southwestern cities as any other.
Every, new steamship brought into this tittle, is
so much towards the grand object referred to.—
Already the connection is quité complete for near-
ly 100 miles, linking together the Bio Grande, Mat-
agorda bay, Galveston, Sabine, the Attakapas and
Nenr Orleans. Tampico, Yera Crua, Aivarado,
Tehuantepec, Campeachy, and the Isthmus ports,
are yet to be reached and added to the feeders of
our southwestern steam marine, New Orleans be-
ing the grand centre, the queen of the gulf, whose
claims in gnltjpn rrnw" ■"""•~*ñ<Mi pntft. But,
Sesame time, the commanding position oi
own Island City, witbber anticipated railway
nections with Yicksburg, Memphis and Cair/ will
command a rich legacy in the enormous fade and
travel, now barely perceptible, but as sarely to be
prosecuted on the gulf coast, as that water seeks
its level. The porta and provinces'south of this,
and the gulf Inlands, are absolutely certain to get
their flour, salted meat and mules through Galves-
ton, from the fertle soil of Texas, whenever the
iron horse extends bis trips 200 miles inland; and
equally certain is it when oui> connections are iq^dj
that an immense travel, from the isthmus to
valley of the Mississippi, will exchange steam for
rails at tbis port.
In any view we may take of it—whether in a
local sense, as citizens of Galveston, or in a' more
enlarged and noble one, as citizens of th/ South-
west—we hail the appearance of every additional
steamship on this coast as another ai

""Whoever now seeks to revive sectionalism arrays
imself against the Constitution, and, consequent-
ly, against the Union.. Of oourse, it is to be exp~^-'
that fanaticism will rave and clamor against vi
cisión Of the Supreme Court. But fanaticism o
to be a formidable enemy when it seeks to mei
strength with the Union- loving spirit of the people,
sustained and confirmed by the great arbiter of con-
stitutional questions. Fanaticism becomes power-
less against such a combination, and henc we n
smile at the madness with which the organs of blj
republicanism assail the latedeoision of the Supre,
Court. It is the last dying fit of fanatioal section-
alism. It will have the effect of fixing pnblio ati
tion upon the reckless wickedness whiob has hen
fore impelled the seotional agitators to tm the re-
public to the very verge of disruption.
"We feel, therefore, that the danger ia for the pres-
ent over ; that sectionalism is virtually dead—that
it has been crushed out by the popular verdict "
the presidential election ; and that the decision ..
the Supreme Court has left nothing vital in repnb
Uoanism, and has placed the democratic party be-
yond and above all competition as the constitutional,
national, Union party/of the country. Mr. Buch-
