ENGLAND AND THE METRICAL

Some |ifii>ple call this

will join the international
commission on the metrical

THE POWER OF THE HUMAN
EYE.
The power of the human eye
is indeed wonderful. Its in-
fluence on all animals, and
even on man, can be demon-
strated by a single experiment
Stand before a soda fountain
in a popular drug store some
warm day. Say to the clerk
that you would like a glass
of cold, refreshing soda water.
The clerk will say:
"Certainly. * What sirup,
sir?"
Now do not answer him.
Do not say a word. Remain
perfectly quiet and fix your
eye steadily upon the waiting
clerk until you have riveted
his attention. Then, still re-
maining perfectly quiet,
contract the muscles of the
left eve in such a manner as
to draw the corners of the lids
farthest from the nose close
together, and holding them
in this position gaze steadily
at the clerk for an instant, at
the same time fixing the name
of the syrup you want firmly
in your mind; then release
the tipper lid, and promptly
restore the eye to its natural
shape. The effect will be
magical. The clerk without
speaking will yield to the
power of your gaze, and flavor
your soda with . Well,
I don't know what he will
flavor it with, but it will be
just what you wanted.
