Now York. May 6—When
;)r. Douglas went to General
Grant's house last night, there
seemed to be some cause to
ear that the night would he a
restless one, consequently the
doctor stayed all night. Con-
rary to expectations, General
Grant slept yesterday one
íour on his bed, which is lon-
ger than he has slept in his
bed for month . He had more
sleep yesterday than he has
lad for weeks. Colonel Fred
Gran says he is feeling quite
well this morning.

Winnipeg, May 5.—The
telegraph line to the frontier
is still down between Hum-
t)olt and Clark's crossing.—
There is much speculation as
o the cause of its remaining
down so long. Repairers left
Humbolt on Saturday to look
for the break and nothing has
been heard of them. A pri-
vate dispatch, brought by a
courier to Humbolt and tele
graphed from there today, is
dated, "Camp six miles south
of Gabriel's Crossing." This
would indicate that General
Middleton has moved ¿ionio
thirty-four miles. It is known
that the steamer Northcote
was floated on Saturday, and
it is supposed she lias reached
Clark's crossing long before
this. The water in the river
is constantly rising and the
stream can now be readily
used.
Chicago, May 5.—A Winni-
peg special says: Comtnunica
tion with points north of Hum-
bolt is still interfered with.
Dispatches from Middleton
have been brought by courier
to Humbolt, making news se-
veral days late. The latest
dispatches from this source
stnte that the steamer North-
cote has been extricated and
and reached Clark's crossing
yesterday. The messages say
further that Middleton now
having plenty of ammunition
and supplies, an advance will
likely be made at once. It is
expected that the rebels will
offer battle at Batouche. Mid-
dleton has two gutling guns,
with which he expects to do
deadly execution. News of
another engagement is daily
