the business men who have an

amusing incident growing out
of their u*e was related to us

The house or sobbing wren
is a bird peculiar to Southwest
ern Texas. Its melancholy
note is described as very im
prcssive. It begins in n high-
clear key, like the tinkling of
silver bells, and descending
gradually from one chime to
an other, it suddenly falters,
breaks off and sobs like a child
—the song dying away in a
gasp. The song is heard only
in the opeeing light of dawn,
and is repeated but it few
times. The singer is rarely
seen during the day.

Casimiro Tama yo, Esq.,
Brownsville, Texas.
Dear Sir:—In compliance with
your request for our opinion as to
the legality <>[' inspection of hides by
persons in Hidalgo and Starr Coun
ties, we beg to submit to you the
following:
The law does not provide for an
Inspector of Hides for either Hi-
dalgo or Starr Counties. The
Governor might appoint an Inspec-
tor for each of these comities, but
such Inspector would have authori
tv, only, to inspect cattle, and not
hides.
Hence all hides brought intoyour
County,from Hidalgo or Starr Coun-
ties, known or reported to you as
sold, or as leaving or going out of
this County, for sale or shipment,
must be inspected by you. And it
is your duty to disregard any in-
spection made by persons, claiming
to act as Inspectors of IIidos and
Animals, in either Hidalgo or Starr
Counties.
Ycry respectfully, Are.
