THE LEDGER.
The Bloomer.
Th * saucy maid may toss her head
When she her bustle hitches on ;
Be mine to praise in artk^s lays
The graceful girl with breeches on ! •
Tbe pcticoat no more shall float
On limb whot-cshape bewitches one;
But in its place, with modest grace,
Tho-e limbs shall hold the breeches on.
The bucks and beaux turn up their nose
At co'tly robes with patches on ;
But goodness me. what if they see
Such beauty spots the breeches on ?
Ye muslin drenes, white and thin,
With fairy fingered stitches on,
I fear your day Las passed away,
Since women put the breeches on.
Ah ? well-a-day, the bard may say,
Sha'l one bestow his kisses on
A shameless maid, who's not afraid
To put a pair of breeches on 1
She'll make him feel, fr m head to heel,
Whatever else he hitches on,
He has no right, by day or night
Ttymt a pair of brecches on.
We always see the graces three
Without a rag the witches on;
But oh! Gad Zooks, how would it look
Should each one putthe breeches on!

grave, we could not
dark must be the h
help thinking how
•arts of the bereaved
parents, who stood in suppressed anguish
at its head, from tlio very beauty and
brightness around ihein. The little collin
was lowered into the grave; the hollow
sound of "falling sand and gravel fell faint-
ly upon the ear; and that only child of
loveliness and nromise was left in its cold
and narrow bed, until 'earth and sea
heave at the trump of God.' As we turn-
ed away from the window, and awaited the
morning service of tlie sanctuary, we
thought of that desolate mother and that
bereaved father, and how impotent would
be all attempts at consolation for the loss
of an only and darling child. And there-
withal came to mind the reflections of a
similar scene of sadne?3 by the eloquent
author of a discourse once noticed in these
pages, on k The Mission of Little Chil-
dren 'So one feel.t t lie death of a child
as a mother feels it. Tite father cannot
realize it thus. True, there is a vacancy
in his home and a heaviness in his heart.
There i j a chain of association that at its
act time come* round with its broken link ;
there are memories of endearment, a keen
sense of loss,a weeping over crushed hopes,
and a pain of wounded affection, iiut
the Mother feels that one has been taken
away who was still closer to her heart.—
Hers has been'the office of constant min-
istration. Kvcry graduation of feature
developed before her eyes; she detected
every new gleam of infant intelligence;
she heard the first utterance of every
fttammering word; she was the refuge of
its fears, the supply of its wants; and eve-
ry task of affection wove a new link, and
made dear to her its objcct. And when
her child dies, a portion of her own life,
r.sit were, dies with it. IIow can she give
her darling up, with all these loving mem-
ories, these fond associations ? The timid
hands that have so often takeu hers in
trust and love, how can she fold them on
its silent breast, and surrender them to
the cold clasp of Death ? The feet whose
wanderings she has watched so narrowly,
how can the see them straightened to go
down into the dark valley ? The head
that she had pressed to iur lips and bosom,
that she has watched in peaceful slumber,
and in burning sickness, a hair of which
she could not see harmed, oh, how can she
consign it to the dark chamber of the
grave? It was a gleam of sunshine and a
voi-'e of perpetual gladness in her home :
she had learned from it blessed lessons .of
simplicity, sincerity, purity, faith; it had
unsealed within her a gushing, nevét-cb
bing tide of affection; when suddenly it
was taken away, and that home is left dark
and silent; and to the vain and heart ren-
ding aspiration, ; Shall that child never
return again V there breaks, iu response
through the cold gray silence,' Nevermore
—«h, nevermore!' The heart is like a
forsakeu mansion, and that word goes echo-
ing through its desolate chambers. And
yet. fond mother ? (• Time brings such
wondrous easing. ) thou wilt in after years
look back with not unpleasing sadness,
«▼en upon this scene of grief:
' Thou U say: My first bom blessing
It almost broke my heart
When thou wert forced to gc;
And vet for thee I know
*Twas better to depart.
1 God took thee in His mercy'
A hunk uutasked. untried ;
lie fought the fight for thee,
lie won the victory,
And thou att sanctified.
• I look around, and see
The evil ways of men
And, oh, beloved child.
I'm more than reconciled
To tby departure then.
• The liule hands that clasped me.
The innocent lips that pressed,
W ould they have been as pure
Till now, as when of yore
I lulled thee on my breast ? '
And in this spirit, and with this faith,
the affections of that bereaved mother
will1 reach out after that little one; follow
it to the unseen and spiritual world, which
will become a great and vivid reality to
Her. Its atmosphere will be around her ;
cords of affection will draw her to it, the
face of ber departed one will lookout
from it;' and she will evermore think of
ber child as (not lost, but sone before.1
