Public spirited yonth.—The other
day a small boy came tearing round a
.comer with his rags fluttering in the
wind, his face smeared with molasses
and a shingle flourishing in his hand,
while he was shouting to another
boy, about the size of a pepper box, who
stood near a quarter ot a mile down
the street: "Oh, Bill Bill, get as many
boys as ever you can, ami as many

Liquid Glue.—A strong liquid glue,
that will keep for years without chang-

glazed vessel a quart of water and
about three pounds of hard ,glue.
This is to be melted over a slo^

A bachelor friend of outs got a val- j
entine this year, which opened beau-
tifully. Th« fair writer sang in .sweet j
rhymes that she was dying to learn a
secret which he kept shut up in his i
heart It was not to know it he had !
wealth; it was not to ascertain his ped-
igree and leam if he had noble rela-
tion. But whould he tel 1 her. and cure
'the wound in her soul; would he tell
her, and thrill a maiden's heart with
ineff&hle joy; would he tell her and
confer a happiness upon her which
riches and honor could not bring;
would he—would he toil her how
much he paid for that new wig !

Population of (Jhina.—Some idea j
r f the importance oí the revoiuton now
going forward in China may be ob-
tained from reflection on the fact that
the population of China proper is es-
timated, and it is believed correctly' at
367,632,907 inhabitants. In the de-
pendencies of Mantehooria, Mongolia.
Turkistan, Thibit, &c, the population
is about 40,000,000 making a total of
over four hundred milliens of people
under one government, or eighteen
times as many as live under this Re-
public. Should our population dou-
ble in number every half century it
would require nearly two hundred and
fifty years to acquire a population
equal to the present population of
China.
The quantity of land in China, is es-
timated at 830,820,100 English acres,
of which 141,139,317 or nearly one
sixty, is under cultivation. The total
area in square miles, is 1,297,999 and
the population on each square mile
283. Were the Chinese a warlike
people, and as far advanced in all the
modern arts aud sciences as the Amer-
icans or Engilsh, they would overun
all Asia, and conquer the combined
-armies of Europe. The effects of A
successful revolution among -100. 000
000 cannot be forshadowed by any
human imagination.

The Dartmoor Prisoners.—
There are in New York city some
eight survivors of the prisoners iucar-
cerated at Dartmoor by the Biiglish
daring the last war. Marblehead,
Mass., contains some 40 more. We
jee it stated that in 'Salem there are
some 20 or 30. Many of them are in
needy circumstauces. and aré about to
petition Congress for relief.
Monkey Hunting.—' Oliver Scott,
judging by a letter of his to the Ar-
kansas Independent, is as great at mon-
key killing as Capt. Martin Scott was
in bringing down coons. He writes
that he is in South America, hunting
monkeys. He kills about eight thous-
and a year, &ud spHs the skins at Bu-
mona. They are bought by French-
men, and tanned for the manufacture
of kid gloves, those articles Wing now
made, it is said, wholly of monkey
skins. He gets from twenty to forty
cents for each sain.
