Congress.
As yet tliero «loes i:ot appear to Lo
! any definite action by Congress, in
roforeiico to providing other govom-
incuts than tlioso now in existence for
the Southern States. It sccme to be
the general opinion that nothing will
be done on this subject until after the
meeting of the next Congress on the
4th day of March. The new members
then take their seats, and from np-
'"Wharton & SnudcUlT, 115 Common St., j^m-ances, tho Kadienl majority will
then be greater tiian at present.
~ py O. Patrick, Hempstead, is J Steps have already been taken by
authorized to receive subscriptions iho lower Houso to prefer articles of
and advertising for the Countryman, impeachment against President John-
and collect money due this office. ; son. The subject is before the
•^*- would JnJ'cin,y Committee who are quietly
t-ikiug testimony. In this matter the
lower House acts as a kind of grand
jury to find an indictment. The caBe
then goes before the Senate, over
which, during the trial, the Chief
Justice of the Supreme Court of the
United States is to preside, and the
Senate sitting as a Court, hears the
evidence and renders its veidict. It
takes two-thirds of the Senate to con-
vict, Few doubt what that verdict
wi'.l be, if a trial is ever had.
In the meantime, all in the South
is uncertainty and doubt. It matters
little to us what our government is,
but we want certainty and stability.
Wo want to know what we may de-
pend upon. Our people aru more in-
terested just now in mending their
broken fortunes, than in inquiring
iuto the rights aud wrongs of the gov-
ernment. They feel that it makes
little difference to them whether we
are represented in Congress or not,
provided they are let alono and allow-
ed to reap the rewards of peaceful in-
dustry. Tho only feeling exhibited
is in the political newspapers, whose
polities iii their trade; and in tho ef-
forts of those recently elccted to take
their seats and receive their Green-
backs, Otherwise all is quiet. So
let it remain.
Duloear Commercial Com. bub.
It is with pleasure that we note the
increased popularity of this the oldest
commercial college on this continent
Met ween two and three hundred stu-
cents aro in constant attendance, and
rarely a day passes hut additions are
made to the number, This is as it
should be, for Mr. Do]bear has spared

Beautiful Sentiment.—When the
Hindoo priest is about to baptise an
infant, hu utters tho following beau-
tiful sentiment; "Little Lábe. thou
enterest tho world weeping, while all
around smile ; contrive so to live, that
you may depart in smiles while all
around you weep."
Yielding to fanaticism will not stop
its onward march any more than the j —-
giving way of a dam in a stream will' Commission Merchants,

We presume he has plenty of tho same

t3T "Tho Land* We Love" for
January, 1HC7, has been received
from J. E. Mason of Galveston. It
is a very interesting Maganine, edited
by Gen. I). II. Mill, and published at
Charlotte, N. ('. We have also re-
ceived a number of late papers from
the Bamo source, for all which no
return thanks.
Old Grime*.—We published a
poem entitled "Young Grimes," a
wcok or two ago. Can not some ol
our cotem's give us the original siiuon
keeping, penmanship, arithmetic,
commercial law, all forms of accounts,
phonography, telegraphing, mathe-
matics, and the languages, aro taught
by able professors, well known for
I their qualifications in their several
departments. A diploma in this col-
lege is a passport in all communities,
and there are gruduatingclas.Ts every
month. About seventy-five are to
graduate next month ; and all who
have graduated are either in good
situations or doing business for them-
selves. A commercial course at this
college is in fact the best investment
parents can make for their sons. A
word to the wise is sufficient.
71 íii 11 ltider Frozen to Death.—
From the C'orptu Cliristi Advertiser.
1st. If ^ distant friend desires you
to brand can animal for him, do so, but
bo careful that the brand you uso is
your own, as that brand will show to
better advautage than his.
2d. In branding, make uso of sev-
eral different brands, though you may
have but few cattle, as you thereby
multiply the chances of increasing
your stock; besides tho additional
importance it will enable you to as-
sume.
Ud. Never keep up your own cows,
but milk any you can get iu other
brands; you thereby save your
calves, and are enabled to take all
tho milk, as stray calves can do on
what is left, without you being at the
trouble%f driving thorn out to grass.
4th. When branding, always put
in u few stray calves with your own
and let the Mexicans brand them for
you; such ^mistakes, of course, arc
unavoidable.
5th. If a beef-buyer comes into the
country, hasten to him, offer your
beeves at five dollars a head less than
ho is willing to give, and agree to
drivo them to any distance for bis
convenieuce. You thereby keep tho
price of beeves from gutting too high,
and add a good percontago to the
profits of the buyer, whiclrought to
be highly gratifying to the feelings of
stock-raisers.
Gth. Never allow a calf to run for a
bull unless you think it too mean and
ugly for a steer. You thereby pre-
vent an excess of size and beauty
among the cattle.
7th. Always drive your beeves to
the butcher without any previous
agreement, no matter if it be fifty
miles, and let him make his own price
for them. You thereby save him a
great deal of trouble and expense.
8tb. Always kill heifers in prefer-'
unco to steers, as they aru more apt
to breed, and you will thereby pre-
vent the danger of your stock becom-
ing too large.
•Jth. Invariably sell every beef, if
you have any, at any prieu you can
get, and when you want meat, kill
the first fat animal you find, sending
word immediately to the owner that
you have done so, with permission
for him to take the first good beef of |
yours ho can find, in the place of it.
