on Monday night and a valuable

chargo of the plac¿, and if he did, not
get out they would arrest him. He
obeyed them. When Mr. Pundt
came back two fine meerschaum
pipes and a Colt's pistol were gone.
If the soldiers did commit this .rob-
bery, it ought to be investigated, as
we are q uite sure Captain Lancaster
would see justice done to Mr. Pundt
if one of his soldiers committed the
crime, mentioned.
THE RIOT.
—Mckder.—Hempstead has been
full of rumors for the last two days
of a most alarming character. Ne-
gro riots, murder, arson, etc. We
have felt it our duty to fully investi-
gate the same and received the follow-
ing account from Capt. Lancaster,
commanding the troops here. He
says; that yesterday evening tw<#
gentlemen came into camp, saying
that a negro had been murdered and
that the negroes had risen, en masse,
and taken prisoner a man named Bell,
twelve ov fifteen miles irom here, and
put him, Bell, in chains, on suspicion
of being the murderer; also bearing
a letter from a justice holding the in-
quest, calling for help. (Japt. L.
informs us that he sent Lieut. Trox el
with six men to investigate the mat-
ter. We await further information,
and suspend our opinion on the sub-
ject until it is gained, hoping that
our citizens will refet assured we shall
publish the whole truth about the
matter as soon as possible; That a
negro has been killed is undoubted:
that a white man is held ;by a band of
armed negroes is also true. As we do
not know the particulars, we refrain
from comment, Capt. L. assures us
ne will bring the man here, if t he tes-
timony is against him, and protect
him until trial. We await further
particularg with much anxiety. ,
Later.—Since writing the above,
Lieut. Troxel, sent out by Capt.
Lancaster with a , detacliTfient of
troops,- has 'returned, and irtniisLes
us with the following iacts about the
disturbance.
Upon proceeding • to the place
where Belli was confined by the ne-
groes, he fouud the premises >varin-
in<* with armed freedmen. to (lie hue-
O
ber of 150 or 200* Some five or six
of them were in the room guarding
Mr. Bell. The Lieut, ordered hem
out at once, took possession of the
prisoner, and dispersed them, telling
them to return to their quarters aud
put away their arms, threatening to
arrest and carry them to Hempstead
if they did not obey. In a very
short time order was restored. The
inquest was then held by Squiae
Hensley, and the verdict, as given
by the jury, was that the deceased
came to his death from a gun-shot,
fired by some person or persons un-
known, At the trial next day Mr
Bell was found innocent of the
charges preferred against him, and
fully acquitted.
It appears that the negro was shot
on the road, and Mr. Bell happening
to come up the road about the same
time was suspeéted by the negroes,
who put a guard around his house that
night, and early #Sunday morning
arrested him. The negroes were in
a state of great excitement, and bnt
dozen feet to steer clear of a spider or
a fly; they have no affectation or
silly airs about them. When they
meet you, they speak without putting
on a dozen silly aírs, and trying to
show off to bettecadvantage, and you
feel as though you were talking to a
human being, aud not to a painted
automaton or a fallen angel.
If the girls knew how sadly they
missed while endeavoring to show
off their delicate hands, nnsoiled
skins, and putting on a thousaud airs,
they would give worlds for the situa-
tion of working ladies, who are as
far ahead of them in intelligence, in
honor and in everything, as the
heavens are ¡jbove the earth.
Be wise, then, you who have made
fools of yourselves through life. Turn
over a new leaf, and begin, though
late, to live and act like human be-
ings, as companions to mortal man,
beings, as playthings and dolls. In,
no other way can you he happy and
subserve the designs of your existence.
