RARTY PLATFORMS.
Read the Democratic platform, see
the particular points in it on which
you agree, decide wherein you could
make an impr.oycriienj,, change t>r add
. additional planks; then read the Re-
publican platform, decide what is
" right, what is best for you, your
*■ children, for your children's .chifdren
change the party .to which* you 'be-
long. If this is loo large an" under-
taking, leave that • party and vote
for what is right, regardless of party
affiliations.
Link your fortunes with the "Third
-•> party," if they stand for rl.e princi-
ples you want inaugurated and which
are for the best interest? of Amer
state health department and distrib-
uted to every city, asks in large type,
"If you owned a . thorough-bred, you
iwould want to preserve his pedigree?
Would you not-like to preserve your
own ? Would you not he glad to.
know that the birth and death of your
father, yourself, your children would
be recorded where you know it would
ibe kept forever? Yjoii can have á re-
cord of births in Virginia if you will
assist iirlhe enforcement of the law."
Such an appeal to the public shows a
growing understanding - of popular
psychology on the part of . health, of-
ficials.^ Compulsion, in the' fojyn óf
finés or imprisonment, may be neces-
sary, in extreme cases, to enforce
any law. But the Journal of the Am-
erican Medical Association thinks it
is much better to follow the^path oí
least resistance and to secure the will-
ing cooperation of the people by
showing them that health laws and
regulations are not arbitrary rules,
but are for. their own protection and
benefitl The American people will
report births and deaths, if they are
¡convinced of the necessity for such
a measure and understand why it is
cxpected of them.
