As soon as the election is
over, we Texan* can settle
down to qrgulng about which
Thursday well take off to*
Thanksgiving this year. Well
have a choice of two. you
know.
Officially, and by order of
the Texas Legislature,
Thanksgiving in Texas will
be observed on the last Thurs-
day in November . . . which
will be November 29. That's
the date on which Canadian
schools will begin the Thanks-
giving holidays.
The Post Ofiice. however,
will go along with the na-
tional Thanksgiving date
which will bo on the fourth
Thursday of November . . .
this year on November 22 . . .
and that's the date, incident-
ally, which will be marked on
your calendars. But we Tex-
ans, by act of the Legislature,
will eat turkey a week later
than everyone else.
Of course, the Legislature
didn't intend it that way.
Thanksgiving used to be, tra-
ditionally, on the fourth
Thursday in November . . .
but when FDR tried to move
it up to the third Thursday
as a pump-priming attempt
to lengthen the Christmas
shopping season, Texas revolt-
ed .. . and to make it as em-
phatic a s possible, Texas
Legislators designated the
Thanksgiving date i n this
state as the "last" Thursday,
not the "fourth."
It never occurred to our
Legislature, we suppose, that
November would occasionally
have five Thursdays instead
of the usual four.
Texas voters will have a
choice next Tuesday of
"scratching" the names of
candidates they don't like ...
or checking the little squares
beside the names of the can-
didates they do want to vote
for. But don't try to use the
"check" system on the amend-
ments at the bottom of the
ballot, because it won't work
there. To vote on the amend-
ments, you'll have to scratph
out the choice that you don't
want, leaving the statement
which you do approve.
Election judges are general-
ly pretty lenient in tallying
ballots ... if they can de-
termine the voter's intention,
they'll count the ballot that
way. That is. of course, what
the law calls for. But you can
make the election Judge's Job
a lot easier if, you'll mark
your ballot carefully so that
your choice is unmistakable.
One of our dyed-in-the-wool
Democrat friends told us a lit-
tle gleefully the other day
that he had just cast an ab-
sentee ballot and had
"scratched" Price Daniel, writ-
ing in W. Lee O'Daniel's name

stead. Just as gleefully, we
accused him of "bolting" the
party ticket just as much as
those of us who are going to
"scratch" Stevenson in favor
of Eisenhower ... and darned
if he didn't admit it, though
not very gleefully.
We're not going to mention
his name because we think
ifs probably beneath the dig-
nity of a County Judge to
have his monicker bandied
about in print this way. But
we hope Pappy ODaniel does-
n't get elected Governor of
Texas, and well bet that

Fastest "News Service"

Had a frantic wire from Wash-
ington yesterday-saying that the
loctl Congressman was making a
surprise visit and a short speech.
Could I get the word around fast?
No time for a special edition of
the Clarion, so I turned to the
fastest "news service" in town...
Windy Taylor. He spent an hour
mobilizing his Lodge and Court
House cronies-all pretty fair
talkers-and the rest is history.
Biggest turnout ever.
As a newspaperman, I hate
to admit it-but facts are facts.
The Windys of this world aren't
only quicker news spreaders
than our paper . . . they've
even got better circulation.

others prefer a glaaa of beer.
There's a lot to be said fer both
attitudes. But if you go in for gab

with him on some question of per.
sonal choice. Use your own "good
censorship."

You are a free Texan . . . You can vote any way you like. Regardless of what you
may have heard, it is perfectly legal to split your ticket if you want to, just as it
is legal to vote the Democratic ticket straight, or the Republican ticket straight.
The purpose of the ballot is to determine what the people want. And if you want
to vote for Eisenhower and Nixon — then cast the rest of your ballot for the
Democratic nominees — that is your privilege. Don't let anyone tell vou other-
wise! BY LAW YOUR VOTE MUST BE COUNTED.
