Some of the principal real estate
men here agreed nearly a month ago
upon the organization of an exchange
so as to facilitate the transaction of
business and, as far as possible, keep
Velasco clear of sharpers, sharks,
snides and dead beats, who under the
guise of real estate agents, brokers
ect., are liable to hang out their shing-
les In any city to the detriment there-
of.
During the rush of the great auction
sale of cit.y lots, time could not be
spared to effect the organization. Dur-
ing the holidays following, a number
of real estate agents were absent visit-
ing their former homes or making ar-
rangements to move their families
hither.
Some of these have not returned but
enough were on hand yesterday to hold
a prelemlnary meeting and with the
consent of their absent confreres, de-
cide upon a programme that will give
Velasco as good a real estate exchange
as far as the business and financial
standing of the members is concerned,
aa can be found in the south. Among
the firms and men present at this
meeting The Dai i. v Times reporter
noted the following:
H. D. Brooke,
Hhapard, Stephens &, Co.,
Wall & Norfieet,
Abbot & Marmion,
Henderson A McC'ord,
Bradford & Burlew,
Perry A North rup,
O. W. Crawford.
By unanimous votes O. W. Craw-
ford was chosen chairman and H. I).
Brooke, secretary.
In one of those terse speeches for
which ho Is famous, Mr. Crawford
stated the object of the meeting and
made a few suggestions regarding the
future course to bo pursued by the ex-
change. After a quiet discussion,
it was decided to subscribe sufficient
funds for the erection of a three story
brick building and all present were
put upon the finance committee,
whose duty should also be to select
plans and choose contracts with arch-
itects and builders.
Lot twelve In block four was chosen
as the location and BectretaryH. 1).
Brooke was authorized to notify the
syndicate that their terms for the sale
of the same was accepted.
After transacting some minor busi-
ness the meeting adjourned, subject
to the chairman's call. The per-
sonen of the members present
assures Velasco of what they and in
fact, all the best real estate element
here recognize as desirable, if not
necessary, the solid formation of an
exchange that will be a protective ele-
ment for both buyers and sellers and
will give additional confidence inthe
stability of our city's future.
The gentlemen above named repre-
sent a very large amount of capital,
are widely known fortheirhlgh stand-
ing in every sense of the word and
above all, have showed their faith in
Brazoria County's and Velasco's great
and early advancement, by Investing
heavily here.
Work on the exchange building will
begin us soon as the factories here can
supply the material and the contraéis
for the w. rk be dosed. Il is the earn-
est wish of the men who have taken
I he initiative in this matter that every
real estate man in Velasco will come
forward,join theexchange,and help to
legitimatize aud build up the business.
No city can be built without hard
working, reputable real estate men.
They are first in all city improve-
ments and the more energetic they are
the more rapid Is the growth of the
place.
Mr. A. J. (irciner, one of Velasco's
leading real estate men received a
dispatch yesterday that bis father,
living In Kansas, was dangerous sick.
Mr. Greiner left immediately and may
