New Roads for Velasco.
\ IOLASCO, Tex., June 7. There was
great rejoicing today when the mail ¡

amended charter of the Missouri, Kan-!
sas and Texas called for an extension !
of its system from l'attlsón, seventy
miles distant, to Velasco., This will ]
open direct communication with the;
great cotton, sugar, grain and cattle
counties o«'Ft. Bend, Waller, Whar- j

These according to official figures pro-
duce over half the agricultural wealth

Messrs Rogers, Cannon, Porter and
Jenkins returned from their alligator
hunt yesterday and report that they
killed several but got only one ashore,
Allot them took a shot at this one
and succeeded in lauding him with
the assistance of two negro boys who
were fishing near by. Dr. Porter
says that the actual measurement of
his alligatorship was thirteen and one-
half feet, but others of the party say
he was much longer. Messrs Porter
and Cannon wont out again today
and will report this afternoon,

day afternoon. They wont down in

That the M. K. & T. railway is go-
ing to build to Velasco in the near fu-
ture cannot he denied, ami every eit-
zen of the giant little city by the sea
should do everything in their power
to pufh things forward until the road
is llllill.
With the present means of transpor-
tation to I he beach many citizens of
Velasco are deprived of the splendid
surf bat hing unless t h"y go down by
private conveyance, if the (Julf Bou-
levard railway was completed all of
our citizens could visil the surf at a
nominal cost.
The growth of Velasco in the past
ten months has been wonderful and
rapid, but if I lie proper stops had
been taken by the proper persons its
growth could have been augmented.
We should have had a cotton com-
pres, grain elevator and a cotton and
woolen mill by this time,
The M. K. it T. has practically de-
cided to build to Velasco which is
the biggest tiling wo have yet re-
ceived. Lot the people lie patient and
encourage every business enterprise
in the city and in a very short while
Velasco will come to the front and
will be there to stay.
The («eorge Clark club failed to
meet last night on account of the light
in the city hall. The meeting will be
held in a day or two when tho seats
and lights are in proper shape. The
club is growing In membership every
day and ere long we will show a solid
front for the little giant.
There are few people who stop for a
moment to think how rn ich trouble
il is to got out a readable paper in a
small town or city. It is easy enough
to do if everybody will co-operate
with the management by advertising
liberally and contributing news
matter when opportunity offers.
Otherwise it is difficult.
