SOUTHERN MERCURY.
Nov. 9, 1898
A COLOBADO XIVXS'B XDXA OF FABM-
1*0.
An eastern paper suggested as a
remedy for the evil effects of clos
ing down the silver mines in Colo-
rado, thai the miners "go to farm-
ing." The idea was so absurd in
the minds of the miners, that one
of them is supposed to have ad-
dressed his comrades in the follow-
ing sarcastic rhyme:
Oh, you Colorado miner, why need you
idle be ?
Though the mills do stop, the mines
shut down, and silver is not fr«e,
Behold the soil that richly clings upon
the mountain side,
Go till the gulch, the canyon plow, and
plant the great divide,
Be not idle or discontented, when you
should be getting gain,
From off a Rocky mountain farm or on
the sterile plain.
Go till the granite hills, grow thereon
a bounteous crop,
And reap the golden grain from off the
snow-clad mountain top.
Plant vineyards on the cliffs, that reach
up to the azure sky,
And from the grapes brew wine,a thou-
sand bottles extra dry;
And then, beyond the timber line,
where the air is fresh and free,
Produce tne cherry and the peach, and
plant the apple tree.
plain,
to
So the closing of the mines, 'tis
can do but little harm,
A change from shaft and tunnel
pleasure on the farm;
Throw off your western notions and
adopt the eastern rules,
Forge your drills, picks, and shovels,
into agricultural tools.
out of every four of the people's
homes are mortgaged beyond re-
demption, while the taxes collect-
ed amount to over $7 per capita.
Such conditions, under such cir-
cumstances, could result only from
the weakest, most extravagant,and
worst debauched government that
ever cursed a nation.
The alliance between France and
Russia is causing uneasiness among
the other European countries. France
evidently wants to lick some country,
and needs an ally, England is get-
ting "scared" already, and the
friendly relations between John Bull
and bull-headed Grover may b* in the
direction of an English alliance with
this country.
Cleveland and John Sherman and
also that other John across the pond,
are very desirous of having no money,
except honest dollars. Now is the
time to convince the farmer that
money should be contracted until it
is "honest." He will sell his wheat
two bushels for a dollar and his cot-
ton sixteen pounds for a dollar, and
then be convinced without diffi-
culty. Try him.
ENGLISH DOMINATION.
The London Times, the mouth-
piece of the Bank of England, ssid,
Sept. 27: "Several American sterl-
ing loans will shortly mature. Al-
though European lenders would be
glad to renew them, it is feared, if
the United States senate persists
in its present course, several of
these loans will have to be paid
by shipments of gold to this side."
Americans! you who reverence
the heroes of 1776, how do you
like to have an English aristocrat
dictate what the United States
shall enact? What do you think
of an American citizen who aids
and abets English domination in
American affairs ? Every one fa-
miliar with affairs in England
knows the Times speaks by the
card, hence the above threat was
made to compel the senate to sub-
mit to their financial dictation.
If England can dictate to us fi-
nancially, she may also dictate to
us politically. Is it not a shame
for a republic, containing 65,000,-
000 people, who can, besides feed-
ing and clothing themselves from
the products of their own soil, sell
annually $700,000,000 worth of
farm products, to be compelled to
borrow money from a monarchy
like Eugland ?
Twenty-five years ago we owned
in fee simple the richest continent
the sun ever shone upon, our peo-
ple were prosperous and out of
debt; their products have exceed-
ed annually, by 38 per cent per
oapita, all other nations. In spite
of all this, we are the worst debt
ridden people on earth. Three
