THE ddtJTHSRN MERCURY.
Sate of the Kansas Pacific*
The president, in his message to
congress, gives considerable notice to
the sale of the Kansas Pacific road on
Dec. 16th, and very properly, too, as
the government is interested to the ex-
tent of some ^13,000,000. He points out
to congress that the lowest price which
the court has set on the road as the
minimum bid which will be accepted,
will only secure $2,500,000 to the gov-
ernment
In the sale of the main line some
weeks ago the only thing that saved
the government and secured to it the
full principal and interest on its loan,
was that the property was so valuable
that syndicates, both in the United
States and in Europe, forced the
Union Pacific ring to raise their bid
nearly $15,000,000, and by so doing sat-
isfied the government's claim in full.
But in the sale of the Kansas Pacific
road on DeG. 16th, the Union Pacific
tafty be íñore successful. The ring íá
in better shape to force the govern-
ment to accept anything it chooses to
6#er¿ because with the main line now
in its possession, it ¿Otíld uae it as a
powerful weapon against any opposi-
tion syndicate that should bid up and
buy the branch, and therefore, the syn-
dicate will not be so eager to ob-
tain the branch as they were to obtain
the main lino,
The ring has given out figures show-
ing on an average net ánnüáí earnings
of only $§00,000 for the last eight
years, yet well informed men have as-
serted that the average net annual
earnings for the last ten years were
$1,200,000, which is probably correct.
What particular interest has Texas
in this road? Why, it is the finest kind
Of an object lesson to everyone
in the state, but especially so, for our
worthy State Railroad Commission.
Here is a Kansas road of nearly 700
miles, whose average gross earnings
prior to the panic of 1893, were $3,000,-
000 a year, but which has since shrunk
to $2,000,000 a year, and with the in-
siders and the Union Pacific ring, us-
ing every means possible to show pov-
erty at the coming > auction sale on
Dec. 16th, yet with the falling off
$1,000,000 in gross earnings compared
to the years prior to 1893, and with all
the great efforts put forth by the ring
to show the poverty of the road, the
operating expenses could not be
worked up to more than 70 per cent
of the gross earnings. In other words,
in 1894 and 1895, with only $2,000,000
each year in gross earnings, it cost
$1,400,000 each year to operate on,
leaving her $600,000 each year in net
earnings.
Where is the road in Texas outside
of the Huntington roads that can show
operating expenses of only 70 per cent
of her gross earnings under any such
adverse circumstances?
The Trunk lines in Texas, except
the Huntington roads, do not show op-
erating expenses as low as 70 per cent,
even in their best years. No state in
the union has felt the depression in
business throughout the country more
than Kansas. Tet, this Kansas road
with her own people helping to show
increased poverty, and with lavish ex-
penditures under the receivers, has
only Increased her operating expenses
10 -per cent, while many of the Texas
trunk lines have the unmitigated gall
