and where our families know there
is a community behind them," said
Rabbi Jay Weinstein, Dallas' coordina-
tor for Yachad and the National Jewish
Council for Disabilities (NJCD). "All
children are to be recognized and ac-
cepted, regardless of their abilities or
disabilities."

to play and learn about animals.
Yachad s Dallas chapter, in its sec-
ond year, joins more than 45 others
throughout the United States and
Canada as the only national resource
center that, through a wide range of
social, recreational and religious pro-
grams, provides specialized guidance
and information and directs services
to those in the Jewish community who
have special needs.
Events at Special Needs Family Day
will include a full day of youth pro-
grams including support groups, sports
and other activities for infants through
college-age students, those with special
needs and their typically function-
ing siblings. The keynote address by
Dr. Jeff Lichtman, national director of
Yachad/NJCD for more than 20 years,
will be on "Faith in the Face of life's
Challenged and Vision for a Truly In-
clusive Community." Adult program-
ming also includes sessions on "Legal
and Financial Planning for Children
with Special Needs," "ADHD and oth-
er Challenging Behaviors: Effective
Interventions," "Understanding and
Responding to our Child's Sexuality:
Dating and Marriage," "The Chal-
lenges of Autism and Asperger's Syn-
drome: How to Respond Effectively,"
"Making All Kids Feel Special: How
to Address Sibling Issues in Your
Family" and "Sorrow, Disappoint-
ment and Grief: Wounds that Don't
Heal." A kosher lunch and resource
fair are scheduled for midday.
In addition to Dr. Lichtman, ex-
pert presenters include Dr. Baer Ack-
erman (outpatient child, adolescent,
and adult psychiatry), Michelle Beck
(Pumpkin Littles), A. David Boom-
stein and T.J. Kroehle (life planning
for families of special needs), Julie
Chapman and Pam Quarterman
(Oak Hill Academy). Student vol-
unteers from Akiba Academy, B'nai
B'rith Youth Organization, Mesorah
High School for Girls and Yavneh
Academy, many of whom volunteer
with Yachad during the year, as well
as the group's advisers, will assist
throughout the day.
"That Dallas is able to host such
an inclusive, involved and exciting
program, in just its second year, is
wonderful and a testament to the de-
velopment of the Yachad program,"
Dr. Lichtman said. "The parallel pro-
gramming for children with special
needs, their siblings and their parents
is a key component and the building
of relationships within the commu-
nity is critical. Universally we hear
how much people [gain] from our
programming... the opportunity for
everyone to interact is meaningful."
