TEXAS JEWISH POST #SINCE 1947
March 11,2010 I 3
Friends remember Elliott Dlin
By Sharon Wisch-Ray
Giving. Concerned. Caring.
Brilliant. These are the words that
those who were close to him use
to describe Elliott Dlin, who died
suddenly March 3 of a heart at-
tack. He was 57.
Dlin was the museum director
of the Dallas Holocaust Museum/
Center for Education and Toler-
ance, and had been at the helm of
the museum since January 2002,
when he moved his family from
Jerusalem to Dallas. He nurtured
the move of the Holocaust Mu-
seum from the JCC campus to
its current location in downtown
Dallas.
"Elly was just exactly what we
needed, a blessing for all of us,
especially the Holocaust Center,"
said Holocaust survivor Jack Alt-
man, who was president of the
Center when Dlin arrived and be-
came his close friend. "I have never
met anyone, here in the U.S. or at
Yad VaShem, with the Holocaust
knowledge that Elly had."
Past President of the Dallas
Holocaust Museum/Center for
Education and Tolerance Michael
B. Schiff said that Dlin's expertise
Elliott Dlin, who died March 3, is re-
membered as a committed, caring
"Upstander" who fought indifference.
about the Holocaust was world-
renowned.
"Elly was an internationally-
recognized expert on the Holo-
caust. In my travels, I always make
a point to visit the Holocaust mu-
seums and memorials in the area.
In my conversations with the di-
rectors and teachers of every mu-
seum — whether it be in Washing-
ton, D.C., London, Moscow, South
Africa or even Sydney, Australia

— the people I spoke with knew
Elly and had taken a course or at-
tended a lecture series on the Ho-
locaust, its history and its lessons
from him."
State Senator Florence Shapiro
commented on the depth and
breadth of Dlin's knowledge on
the subject of the Holocaust. She
sat on a panel with him exploring
the Texas Holocaust and Genocide
Commission at Southern Method-
ist University only two weeks ago
(see this week's TJP, p. 8)., "I mar-
veled at him and his knowledge;
he had a level of expertise that was
unparalleled."
Shapiro will speak at the me-
morial service for Dlin on Sunday,
March 14, at 5 p.m. at Congrega-
tion Shearith Israel.
"When I think about him I keep
coming back to the same word:
committed. He was so committed
with every fiber of his being. When
I think of Elly Dlin I think of com-
mitment to the Holocaust and to
Never Again," she said.
Many of those who were close
to Dlin commented on his unique
ability to give of himself and sim-
ply to be a friend.
"He was an extraordinary man
who did not value material pos-
sessions. Most of all, Elly was a
