TEXAS JEWISH POST #SINCE 1947

Temple Shalom Associate Rabbi Jeremy Schneider
is new leader at Temple Kol Ami in Scottsdale
By Rachel Gross Weinstein
When Rabbi Jeremy Schneider
arrived at Temple Shalom in 2006
shortly after his rabbinic ordina-
tion, he was eager to learn what it
takes to be a good rabbi. Today he
has accomplished that goal and
taken the synagogue to a new level
with his teachings, community jus-
tice work and inherent love for the
Jewish people.
Schneider is leaving his position
as Temple Shalom's associate rabbi
on June 30 to lead Temple Kol Ami
in Scottsdale, Ariz. He will be hon-
ored at Shabbat services on Friday,
June 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Kol Ami, a reform congregation
of nearly 300 families, is dedicated
to tikkun olam and spearheads pro-
grams that feed the hungry, clothe
the homeless and provide oppor-
tunities to children in Arizona who
are less fortunate. Schneider said
this is what primarily attracted him
to the position.
"During my tenure at Temple
Shalom, tikkun olam and social
justice were always important to
me and that's what I like about Kol
Ami," he said. "I am looking for-
ward to doing that work in Arizona.
Because [Kol Ami] is a congregation
dedicated to the ideals of the Reform
movement and is so creative in the
ways it teaches and inspires Jewish
children, we quickly felt at home."
Schneider said his most reward-
ing moments at Temple Shalom
were his involvement with the
young adults group, the conver-
sion and bnai mitzvah programs,
religious school, holiday learning
and teaching at the Florence Melton
Adult Mini School for the last three
years.
In 2008, Schneider was one of six
Americans on an interfaith study
tour sponsored by the United States
State Department to Egypt and Syr-
ia. He also spearheaded a national
initiative for Jewish-Muslim dia-
logue and worked with the Twin-
ning Program that consisted of tem-
ple members meeting and talking
with area mosques and churches.
"I feel proud to have created
space for that kind of growth and
those relationships," he said. "It's
the next step in true interfaith re-
lationships and I believe this will
continue to happen. I am fortu-
nate to have had support from my
colleagues, temple presidents and
board members to do initiatives like
this. I have always been encouraged
to learn and grow."
Schneider grew up in Houston
and attended the University of Tex-
as at Austin, receiving his degree in
education. He decided he wanted
to become a rabbi during his junior
year, and after college, attended
rabbinical school at Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion
in Cincinnati, finishing his studies
at the Los Angeles campus. He also
earned a Masters Degree in Jewish
Education.
Teaching and education have
always been important to him. He
was active in youth groups and at-
tended Greene Family Camp, led
trips to Israel and taught Sunday
school during college.
"When I realized that the rab-
binate was the ultimate teacher,
I knew I wanted to be a rabbi," he
said. "Education is a huge part of
my rabbinate. Everything we do is
a teachable moment that gives an
opportunity to add a little extra to
the ordinary moments in life, mak-
ing them extraordinary. That's what
I have enjoyed most about being a
rabbi."
During his tenure, Schneider
also taught adult education classes
and studied Jewish texts with other
rabbis. At Kol Ami, he will work
closely with the Early Childhood
Center, and the religious school.
