By Commercial Secretaries
The 32d Legislature will absolute-
ly be free from corporate influences
and they will also constitute one of
the most capable, intelligent and
progressive ^bodies |of law givers
that ever assembled at the Capitol.
In fact, we are so confirmed in our
anti-corporation tendencies that
political porch climber have in the
past run for office on anti-corpora-
tion platforms, and it is ^doubtful
if the most courageous present day
statesmen would have the temer-
ity to run for office on a platform
that favor corporations. It is safe
to say that the 32d Legislature has
not a single representative of a cor-
poration in it; yet the corporation
pay 55 per cent of the state tax,
general revenue, the battle cry of
the Fathers of American liberty
during the revolutionary war was
"Taxation without Representa-
tion is TyrannyThe corporations
in Texas put up millions for reve-
nue but have not a word to say on
legislation. Have we exchanged
the spirit of '76 for the big stick of
the present day? The Texas cor-
porations own 16 per cent of the
property and pay 55 per cent of
the tax. Whether these inequal-
ities in our revenue system are due
to brain fog, frown of power or the
absence of a genuine case of chronic
honesty in its acute form is beyond
the jurisdictions of this discussion;
what we say is that the Texas Leg-
islatures are absolutely free from
corporate influences and the rec-
ords prove it.
The subjects of Texas minerals
is a big one. It is 262,000 square
miles in area and 4,00<> feet deep
but it will be handled by men who
have made a study of the subject
at the membership meeting of the
Texas Commercial Secretaries As-
sociation at 'Waco on Nov. 18 19.
Needed legislation that will encour-
age prospectors and needed ap-
propriations for the exploitation
and study of our mineral fields will
be outlined.
The Sticker has had its say
about the grocery "peddlers"
We won't take
your time
But a minute if you will come in and
look over our line of early Fall and Win-
ter patterns. We are expert workmen;
we know exactly how best to suit you
the moment you enter the door. We
have the suitings to suit the most par-
ticular. Our clothes fit faultless. We
work quickly. We are ready. Are you?
WM. KEUPER, JR. Main St
and can add nothing to what it
has already said. The groceries
are now being delivered, an en-
tire carload of 21,000 pounds.
If any one gets stung we can't
help it. Experience is a dear
teacher but a good one. Many
will learn to their sorrow. One
of the best things we have heard
in many a day was that one of
our merchants «was approached
by a certain farmer for the loan
of enough money to pay for his
bill of goods.
A COMPROMISE.
I. E. Clark, E. B. Kessler,
Chas Sengelmann and Schwartz
Bros., associated in the Colora-
do School land deal, while in
Columbus, Monday, rather than
to go into a lengthy law suit with
the present lessee, took $20,000
and agreed to drop the matter*
Of course quite a deal of expense
was made in investigating the
matter, looking at the track of
land and several trips to Colum-
bus, lawyer fees. etc.
