Many politicians and business
men who are accused of political
corruption would get people to
more readily believe their prote3ta -
tion of innocence if they would ab-
tain from 'tryingto block investi-
gation. To raise technical objec-
tions and twist and squirm to pre-
vent inquiry is a poor way to con-
vince people of their blamelessness.
These are the days when the lazy
farmer finds all manners of fault
with the weather and other things
while his indusrious neighbor fgoes
right merrily on cultivating his
crops and in preparing to gather a
bountiful harvest.
The world takes no stock in the
man who plunders his fellowmen
six days in the week and goes to
cjiurch on the seventh day to wor-
ship God.
Why is it that some people can
not or will not pay a compliment
graciously? If necessity compels
them to say something good 6f a
person or of a deed, they invariably
inject a little poisonous virus which
destroys all the value of the compli-
ment.

Queen Mary of England evident-
ly has no use for the loud, fast so-
ciety women whoes chief ambition
seems to be to imitate some of the
vices of society men. Considering
the moral and social influence
which royalty in Great Britain ex-
ert upon the people this attitude of
of the queen will have a salutary
effect.
The present imperial conference
of premiers from the self-governing
colonies of Great Britain promises
to result in actions tliat will be of
far reaching consequences to the
British empire. Not unlikely the
suggestion of an Imperial Council
consisting of delegates from the
colonies will take definite shape.
A man who is not discreet in his
utterances is like a postcard—
everyone can read him.
