FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 1911
it is the man with one worry
who helps to fill lunatic asylums
The man who has so many worries
'that he goes chasing them around
as a cat does its tail finds the va-
riety a good mental corrective and
not only keeps his sanity, but
actaully enjoyes life.
Our old friend, the sea serpent,
has again made his appearence
after an unaccountable absence
of several years. As was to be
expected in this age of progressiv-
ness in fashion and other things,
the serpent recently seen displayed
some new features. Not only had
it the customary head as "large as
a barrel," but also wings several
fefct in length. How highly devel-
oped in some people is the imagina-
tive faculty.
We have been reading Judge
Mansefield's articles on the initi-
ative, referendum and recall,
(Bryan's populistic ideas), in the
Colorado Citizen with quite a
deal of interest. We are like the
farmer, who, after reading a
copy of Plato, said: "Plato has
lots of my ideas." /Now after
reading the judge's articles, we
find that he has lots of our ideas
on this queston.
In1 business and politics a "gen-
tleman's agreement" is apt to be a
very ungentlemanly affair. It
certainly is when in business it is
an understanding between the
members of a combine to evade
the law and the public, and aqually
so in politics when it has for its
object the stifling of enquiry into
alleged wrongdoing, or the defeat
of legislation designed to benefit
the public. '
Ford of the Orange 'Leader
says he has received a letter from
Galveston, on the envelope! of
which was a picture of a pretty
girl in a bathing suit pointing to
the words, "Meet me in Galves-
ton during Cotton Carnival from
July 28th to August ;13th," and
although he hasn't raised a stalk
of cotton, he says he is certianly
going down to meet that girl.
Say, Ford,1 if you get there
before we do tell her we are
comming, too.
No man is above the law, and
no public official is by virture of
his position above public criticism
for the manner h^ -discharges his
official duties. If any other view
should prevail it would result in
an obligarchy or the establishment
of the principle underlying des-
potic monarchies that a king is
above the law.
