SUNSHINE FOR SHUT-IN CLUB
• NEWS.
Membership Drive.
Another wonderful month for our
Shut-In Club, with so many new mem-
bers. We have one hundred and four
members at this writing. Boys and
girls, I want to make a bargain with
you—if each member will send me one
new member this month I will put on
a contest for CASH prizes in the Au-
gust i^sue of the Magazine Section. The
contest will be on a subject you all know
a lot about and the prizes will be dan-
dies, too. Let us set our goal at TWO
HUNDRED and FIFTY members by
August 15th, and then we will have the
contest. Fill in the coupon below for
some friend, if you are a member al-
ready, or for yourself if you have not
joined our club of splendid boys and
girls. The membership is free to all
readers of this page. The purpose of
the club is to bring happiness to Shut-
in boys and girls. Mail the coupon to
Aunt Mary, 1941 Dartmoor Ct., Fort
Worth, Texas.

Are You a Shut-in or Do You Know
, One?
Aunt Mary wants to know all the lit-
tle Shut-in boys and girls who want to
join our club. If you are a Shut-In fill
both the membership and I AM A
SHUT-IN coupon and mail to Aunt
Mary, 1941 Dartmoor- Ct., Fort Worth,
Texas. If you are a member of the club
and know a Shut-in boy or girl, fill in
the Shut-In coupon and send to me at
once.
Laugh With Aunt Mary.
Here is a laugh at the expense of
Aunt Mary. You all remember last
month I told you about a Jimmie Cozart,
who lived in Oklahoma, and what a
wonderful "boy" he must be? Well, the
other day I received a letter from Jim-
mie and the following correction was in
the letter: "I saw my name on the
Boys' and Girls' page and, please ex-
cuse me, but I am a little girl." Of
course, Aunt Mary thought a person
named Jimmie was surely a boy. How
I did laugh. Now, any of you other
girls with names like boys had better
tell me your sex, or I am liable to make
the same mistake again.
About Membership Cards.
With all the applications Aunt Mary
is receiving daily for membership in the
Shut-In Club, it is possible to make a
mistake now and then. If Aunt Mary
should not spell your name correctly,
or should make any other mistake, no-
tify me at once. Also, if you do not
receive your membership card thirty
days after sending me your application,
write me again. Sometimes letters are
lost in the mails and sometimes Aunt
Mary might mislay the letter. I try
hard to send the cards out as soon as
they are received, but there are times
when I can not do this. All of you must
help me to keep the records straight.
Baby Elisa-Marie.
This past
month I have
received so
many letters
from boys and
girls who
wanted t.o
know about
the picture
printed here-
with, which
also appears on
Baby Elisa-Marie. all the Shut-In
club's stationery, that I will have to let
you in on the secret. It is Aunt Mary's
own little girl, who is now two and one-
half years old. She wanted to send a lit-
tle sunshine to you and so she is sending
you her picture.
Are You Living Up to the Rules of the
Club?
Are you living up to the rules of the
club? By this I mean, when Aunt Mary
sends you a notice to send Sunshine to
a Shut-In on a certain date, are you do-
ing it ? Remember, they are looking to
you for the sunshine of happiness, and
i
you must not fail them—send on the
date specified in the notice.
There is another rule I hope you all
will observe and that is, not to spend to
exceed ten cents for your sunshine, if
you spend anything at all. By so doing,
we can all enjoy the work and make
others happy'without burdening any-
one. I am sure the Shut-Ins will enjoy
a story, a poem, or a picture, or some-
thing similar, as much as an expensive
gift. Don't you ?
CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT.
The winners of the "Idea Contest,"
held last month, will be announced in
the July issue. This page had to go to
press too soon for the judges to make a
decision. The prizes will be mailed to
the winners by the first of July.
What About Our Birds This Summer?
Every summer since Aunt Mary has
been visiting you through this page she
has told you different things about the
birds. Aunt Mary loves the birds and
.the trees better than anything else in all
nature. For many years I have tried
to protect the birds and preserve the
trees. Is there a more beautiful sight in
the world than the flash of red flying
through green trees, made by our
beautiful red cardinal and summer tan-
ager? The summer tanager is of a uni-
form red without any crest on his head,
while the cardinal is a brilliant red, chin
and band around bill black and the won-
derfully conspicuous crest that always
reminds me of a crown. Indeed, the car-
dinal may well be considered king of
birds. He bears himself with a refined
and courtly dignity, not often stooping
to soil his feet by walking on the ground.
Then, too, as you know, few lady birds
sing, but the mate of this lofty king is
•a charming singer; her voice is soft-
er than her lordly mate and sounds
much like she says: "Cheer—cheer—
cheer:—good cheer—good cheer!" The
cardinals never migrate and this is be-
cause they live on weed seeds and buds
of trees in the winter as well as insects
and grain in the summer. For many
years these wonderful birds were the
target of every sordid huntsman be-
cause they were so popular with many
silly women who wished only to adorn
their heads and never thought of the
pleasure of other folks or the general
good done by the little cardinal.' I hope
all my little readers will help Aunt Mary
to stop the lulling of these useful
birds which have helped make the
woods of our Southern States so en-
chanting. If you protect the birds, es-
pecially those that do not migrate, they
will soon learn you are their friend
and make your fields their homes.
Do you know what our birds really
eat? In the last twenty-five years the
Biological Survey has examined the
stomachs of no less than 50,000 birds
(mostly# collectors' specimens), and
here are some of the things they have
found: A tree swallow had eaten forty
chinch bugs as well as many other in-
sects; a martin had eaten 2,000 mos-
quitoes; a night hawk had eaten 340
grasshoppers, fifty-two bugs, three
beetles, two wasps, and one spider; a
meadow lark had taken thirty-six cut-
worms as an appetizer; which, I think,
shows very well the work birds help us
do to exterminate the pests which de-
stroy crops. I have heard of one pair
of barn owls whose retreat contained
3,000 skulls of mice and rats. Of course,
we know the birds do eat some grain,
and a little fruit, and a hawk sometimes
swoops up a chicken, but then we ex-
pect to repay kindness with kindness,
generous deeds with generous deeds.
Aunt Mary wants all her boys and
girls to help her preserve and protect
our birds. Ask your friends not to kill
them; tell them the good they do. Try
to keep cats from killing birds, too, be-
cause they kill thousands every year.
Build bird houses for the birds. If there
are no rivers, or lakes near you or they
go dry in the summer time, keep wa-
ter out in the open for the birds, far
enough away from the house so they
will not be afraid to drink it. A good
way to stop a cat from killing birds is
to tie a tiny bell around her neck, and
this will warn the birds and they will
keep out of her reach.
Next month Aunt Mary is going to
write a short story on a certain native
bird, how to distinguish it, how it builds
its nest and how to protect it. I think
it is wonderful to go out in the woods
and be able to say, "There is a red-
breasted grosbeck," etc., and really
know them by name. «
EASY FOR SWORDFISH TO BORE
THROUGH SHIPS.
Did you know there was a creature
that could push its nose through the hull
of a vessel?
It's the swordfish, who has a sharp,
pointed sword on the front of his head.
When he attacks a ship he gives a
great lunge which drives his sword
through heavy beams, copper and all,
often reaching the hold of the vessel.
Usually his knifelike nose is then stuck
so tightly that he can't get it out and
the ship sails safely to port without
a drop of water entering through the
hole he has made.
