Kdltor ItoutM'iai:
Having read several commu-
nications on the subject of pro-
hibition iu the Di:u<M'u vr. 1 now
ask permission to l>e heard
through Its columns, also.
The argument* used by these
desciples of liuccus aie iug« ui
'oils but susceptible of all easy
' aud comprehensible answer.
The objections run as follows:
Prohibition will not prohibit ;
te iu iterance and abolitionism
originated in the North ; teiu
iterance agitation stirs upueigh-
liorhood strife; prohibition d«'
prives us of our rights as Amcr
iciuis, Etc., Ktc.
Prohibition does not prohibit:
Then why are not all tile whis-
key men and Beer Associations
iu favor of prohibition f If they
do not want Prohibition, to lie
consistent, they would advo
i cate prohibitory laws. The
laws of theft will not prevent
theft: then, according to the
above argument, the more we
legislate against theft the more
we foster tlie crime, aud their
remedy to prevent theft would
be to repeal all laws ou the
subject. The falacy of both ar
guiuents is too apparent for ar-
gument.
The temperance move origi
nated in the North, and all
Southern people should not as-
sociate with such deceiving itu
postors: Now, admitting this
to be true, for sake of argument,
let us see how consistent they
are. It comes from the North,
therefore it is Abolitionism, and
its advocates are impostors.
Your Beer Guldens originated
iu Northern cities, ami after-
wards spread their blight over,
the fair sons and daughters of
our own sunny South. Northern
corn is made into whiskey iu
Cincinnati and other Northern
cities, and shipped into the
South by car loads. The Nor-
thern apple ami other fruits are
manufactured into mixtures
called brandy, etc., and shipped
to our citizens by the car load,
as the empty barrels in the
back yards of all our Southern
whisky dealers, ami the bloated,
red nosed men, and emaciated
women, and ragged, neglected
children will snow. Therefore
we should cherish and foster
these institutions, and oppose
any law to prohibit the impor-
tation of this poisonous stuff
from the North. "O, consisten-
cy. thou art a jewell!"
* Temperance comes from the
North, therefore it should not
be tolerated.
' >ur boots, slioesand clothing
conies from ihe North. The iron
that builds our railroads ami
the great engines that move the
mails and commerce of the
country comes from the North.
We look to the North for a
market for our cotton aud grain.
Many of our fathers and moth
ers came from the North. Our
President and the majority of
his heads of departments are
from the North. The majority
of the Democrats in this nation
live in the North, therefore our
commercial, social and national
relations should not be tolerat-
ed.
Much is said about the money
spent iu patronizing Northern
lecturers. Let such as talk this
tell im how much money is sent
North for whisky and beer, h
seems very objectionable in
have people come South to lee
ture on moral subjects, but it is
all right to have them
come by hundreds to sell us
whisky and beer. Show why
your argument does not apply
to the latter class. They cost us
much more.
These whiskey men do not
want any national, neighbor-
hood or family strife. Then why
all this allusion to Abolition-
ism and the North, if it is not
to stir up Southern blood.
You talk about prohibition
depriving you of your
right to sell whisky. If
every man who is now talking
in this manner, should com
menec selling whisky, they
would all be arrested immedi-
ately, ami they know it, be-
cause they would be violating
the law. There i: not a man in
I this country •from Miine to
Georgia, that has a right to sell
■ whisky without a license.
