dead man's widow and brother
testified that Burns was in
good health when he was sent
to lhe asylum and that the only
abrasion on his body was one
of his legs, which had been in-

The most damaging testiuio
ny was that of Charles Brent,
a reporter who successfully
played ih" inanity dodge and
was admitted lo the asylum,
wheie he was an eye witness
of much of the brutal treat-
ment which reduced Burns iu
ten days from a strong man to
a lompletw physical wieck, re-

The story was one ol most
revolting and heartless cruelty.
The witness detailed at great
length repeated acts of brutal

tendants inflicted upon the un
fortunate man. lie declared
that the patient was not unruly

living at 51<> West Fifty-fourth
street, had a genuine surprise
on Good Friday. He had been
out of employment for some
time, aud went out that morn-

feeling well.
On his return he heard a
faint cry. such as lie had heard
on six previous occasions, cov-
ering a period of nine years,
but this cry was the weakest
that had ever saluted him. A
good nutured woman living in
the house had nursed Mrs.
Zeigler, and showed the as ton
ished husband n female baby
only six inches long, and
weighing but thirteen ounces.
I called at the house last
evening and the mother smiled
as she showed me her latest ad-
dition. The mite was taking
its nourishment at the time,
and raised "Cain" at being in
terrupted. The mother said

economy. Let us be just, let
us be generous to each other."
