Cowan announces
his retirement
KCs will host
two big dances
I
Rio Grande City School
Superintendent S.P. Cowan has
officially announced his
retirement effective September
1, 1974.
In an exclusive announced to
the Herald and members of the
board of trustees Cowan said
that on May 16,1973 he had made
reference to his pending
retirement and was now of-
ficially serving notice that he
plans to retire in September of
74.
"You are assured of my
continued interests in the
program of education in this
school system, I will endeavor
to work with the board, faculty,
students and general public in
every possible way throughout
this period." Cowan wrote to
board members and the press.
Cowan also told the board and
the Herald that his five years
here at Rio Grande City had
been rewarding ones and that
he had never regreted coming
to Rio Grande City.
With the cooperation of the
board one of Cowan's principal
achievements was bringing
Master Degreed personnel to
the principalships of ail schools,
within the district.
Under Cowan the district has
made great strides in the
vocational field of education.
He served on a committee with
the state education agency
which allowed him to seek funds
to bring such programs as
Radio and TV repairs,
cosmotology sand other
vocational courses to the school
(The De Saules Council of the
Knights of Columbus will be
hosting two big dances this up-
coming New Year's Eve.
According to council
spokesman F.liseo Smith Jr.,
the KC organization will be
hosting a dance at the newly
expanded KC Hall featuring the
music of Moy Pineda. Reser-
vations for this dance will be
made at Rio Motors Inc. here in
Rio Grande City. Tickets to the
dance are $12.50 per couple.
Smith said that the KCs will
also sponsor a dance at the
parish hall on December 31
featuring music by Bobby
Salinas an his band. Tickets to
this dance can be purchased at
Rio Motors Inc. and they will
cost $3 per person.
"Both dances are presently
under careful planning so that
there is no mix-ups in reser-
vations, we will not crowd the
KC Hall, we'll sell only the
amount of tables and chairs
that we have and that's it,"
Smith said.
The public is urged to par-
ticipate.
