St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital is the
only research center
dedicated exclusively to the
study and conquest of a
catastrophic diseases of
children. Its work, par-
ticularly in leukemia and
other childhood cancers, has
been internationally ac-
claimed and cited as a
leading example for basic
and clinical research.
"No one has ever been
charged for the benefits
provided by St. Jude Hos-
pital," Kirwen said. "And
that includes the extremely
expensive total medical care
provided to children enrolled
in its research studies."
"Over two-thirds of this
year's 19 million dollar
operating budget came from
public support. Each year
we rely on events like this to
pay for the following year's
costs."
"Since Danny Thomas
opened this institution in
1962, his dream of
conquering the deadly
diseases of childhood has
continously been brought
closer to reality. Mr.
Thomas is still the very
active president of this
organization and inspires us
in this cause," Kirwen said.

Everybody has problems, but it's the way we go
about trying to solve them that makes the dif-
ference. Harold B. Walker wrote "Think or
Worry?" "You can think about your problems or
you can worry about them, and there is a vast
difference between the two. Worry is thinking that
has turned toxic. It is jarring music that goes
round and round and never comes to either climax
or conclusion. Thinking works its way through
problems to conclusions and decisions; worry
leaves you in a state of tensely suspended
animation. When you worry, you go over the same
ground endlessly and come out the same place you
started. Thinking makes progress from one place
to another; worry remains static. The problem of
life is to change worry into thinking and anxiety
into creative action."
