sixth birthday with a party on Tuesday,
April 21. Mr. and Mrs. Rufino Cruz, Jr.
honored their daughter. Melinda. with a
party at Pizza Hut. Friends and cousins
attended the festivities in her honor.
.Angle Tullis and daughters Diki Ann and
Tiffany spent the Easter holidays in Rio
Grande City visiting her parents. Formerly
from Rio. Angi and her husband have a
cropdusting business in Pearsail. While
here the girls were treated to a trip to
McAllen for Skateland and a movie with
their cousins Patsy and Michelle Crow.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilberto Garcia celebrated
the baptism of their infant daughter. Monica
Caren. on Sunday April 26. Monica's god-
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Juan Lopez. The
service was held at the Immaculate Con-
ception Church and the families enjoyed a
barbecue dinner afterwards.
OOPS The officers for the Parent
Teacher Organization of the Immaculate
Conception School were listed incorrectly
last week. The slate is as follows for 1981-82;
Rey Cantu. president; J.B. Galindo, vice-
president. Julia Huff, secretary: Jesus
Salazar. treasurer: Beatrice Aguilar.
parliamentarian; and Richard Gutierrez,
Red Gonzalez. Bobby Margo. and Noe
Sanchez directors.
The month of .April has been a busy one for
the Ruth Adela Circle of the St. John United
this Sunday, May 3, with Vangle .Anderson
and Nancy LaGra-.:e presenting a special
program during services.
Woodmen of the World. Magnolia Gove
no. 6167 held its monthly meeting at the U.S.
Army Reserve Building on April 6. Celia M.
Salazar gave her report as delegate to the
40th Biennial Convention held in Dallas
March 22-24. Guests for the evening were
Mrs. Jose P. Olivares and Mrs. Ruben
Teran. Hostesses were .Anita M. Reyna,
Olivia J. Garcia, Zoila Trevrno, and Aminta
A. Reyna. Delicious chicken salad, cookies,
cake, candies, a fruit salad and punch were
served. The winner of the money pot was
Emma Ramirez. All sovereigns are urged
to attend monthly meetings and participate
in the money pot.
Dr. Stinson Worley of Southwest Texas
State University conducted an inservice on
Reading Comprehension to Title I and Title
I Migrant teachers and aides with the RGC
CISD on Wednesday. .April 15, at the
Multipurpose Center. Joel F. Salinas gave
the welcome, and Mrs. Barrera and Mrs.
Porras addressed the group. Superin-
tendent Dr. .A E. Garcia introduced Dr.
Worley, who had been invited to speak to the
group again due to popular demand after a
previous inservice. Many useful techniques
were presented by the SWTSU Reading
Specialist.

love shown.
Congratulations to Cynthia Gonzalez,
senior at Pan American University, who
was among the fifteen applicants accepted
into the Medical Technology Program at
Pan .American University. Her proud
parents are Leah and Fernando M. Gon-
zalez of Rio Grande City.
Dr. Howard W. Smith Jr., vice president
for academic affairs at North Texas State
University in Denton, has released the fall
semester honor roll which lists 1,389 NTSU
students. A Roma student listed on the 3.5
honor roll was Alma E. Gonzalez, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos M. Gon-
zalez. Alma is a 1979 graduate of Roma
High School.
.An Awards Ceremony was held on
Thursday, April 23, following the Rio
Grande City CISD literary events com-
petition on Wednesday and Thursday. E.H.
Garcia gave the welcome, congratulating
all students who participated in the events,
as well as the teachers and parents who
supported them. Superintendent A.E.
Garcia gave the welcome and stated that all
the children were already winners for
having been chosen to represent their
schools in the competition. Principals N.
Escobar, R. Chapa, C. Christesson, R.
Recio, and M. Alaniz presented ribbons to
the participants in picture memory, number
sense, spelling and plain writing, story
telling, and oral reading. The presentation
of trophies was made by E.H, Garcia, with
the Immaculate Conception School winning
the fourth and fifth grade trophy, and the
Roque Guerra Jr. Elementary receiving the
s<... id and third grade trophy.
At a Court of Honor held by Boy Scout
Troop 93 on March 28 at the U.S. Army
Reserve Building .Assistant Scoutmaster
Dario Salinas, then a prospective
bridegroom, was hrvnored by the scouts with
a money tree and a shower of good washes.
Achieving new rank that night were Joel
Tngo, Jr.. William Warren. Kent Peterson,
and Elias Aguilar, Jr., Tenderfoot: and
Jerry Lopez, Robert Cantu, Joel Javier
Garza, and Enrique Garza. Scout. Merit
badges m sports, home repairs, and
citizenship in the nation were received by
Raul Hinojosa III; and one year service
stars were earned by Gilberto F. Guerrero,
Michael A. Ramirez, Ricky Margo, Oscar
Hinojosa. William LaGrange . Daniel R.
Ramirez, and Randy LaGrange.

Gebhart and two assistant scoutmasters for
a day of hiking and working on ranks.
Earning the rank of Scout were Richard
Cantu, Javier Pena. Blake LaGrange, and
Jorge Guerra. Tenderfoot rank was
achieved by Robert Car.tu, Michael
LaGrange, Hector Alaniz, Gilberto Perez
□I. William LaGrange and Daniel Ramirez.
Kent Peterson and William Warren at-
tained the rank of Second Class. Over 21
skill awards were earned by the scouts
during the session, and a five mile hike was
taken. Hot chocolate and rolls were served
during the afternoon.
The Rio Grande City Lions Club First
Annual Golf Tournament was held Apr. 26,
at the Fort Ringgold Golf Course. Sixteen
three man teams were entered in this
selective drive-low ball tournament. In-
dividual trophies and merchandise cer-
tificates were awarded to the first, second,
and third place teams.
Ruben Saenz, Tournament Director,
reported that the team of Pete Medrano,
Manuel Muntz. and Lalo Alvarado won first
place with a score of 65. Winning second
place with a score of ?2 were Roberto
Alaniz, A.Y. Gil. and David Rivera. Third
place w inners with a score of 73 were Frank
Bazan. JohnnyOlivarez. and Jesus Alvarez.
The Rio Grande City Little League will
kick off the 1981 season with a big weekend
coming up! On Fnday night., all the teams
will be" presented in uniform in the annual
Color Night ceremony at the Little League
field. The league will also be sponsoring a
chicken barbecue on Sunday. May 3. at the
RGC Fire Station, with serving hours from
11 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. Everyone is urged to
support the Little League, which helps to
many of our youth.
On Saturday night. May 2. the Starr Ballet
will present its Second .Annual Spring Dance
Performance at the Rio Grar.de City High
School Auditorium. Tickets are available
from dance students and at the door, with
the performance to begin promptly at 8:20
p.m. The public is invited to attend.
A group of 4'H'ers from Starr County will
be going on to State Roundup at College
Station June 2-4 after winning awards at
District Roundup April 23 in Laredo. The
Starr Grande 4-H team of Rolando and Roel
Hernandez won a first with their Family
Life project. San Isidro 4-H'ers winning
were Adriana Juarez, second place. Public
Speaking: .Anita Viilarreal. first, Pork; and
the team of Yelma Viilarreal and Melissa
Garcia, second, Horticulture Preparation
and Use. Sandra Farias of San Isidro 4-H,
and juniors do not compete at state. The
competitors were accompanied to Laredo
by Extension Agents Yolanda Scrivner and
David Sandefer and by adult leaders.
Congratulations to the La Grulla Junior
High Debaters, who placed in the 164-A
debate tournament in Falfurrias recently.
The Grulla team took first, second and
third places in the sixth and seventh grade
divisions and second in the eighth grade
division.

Silva, Joaquin Gutierrez, Marcos Flores,
Giselle Hernandez, Alma Guerra, Cynthia
Solis, Juan J. Guzman, Gilberto Viilarreal,
Leticia Ortiz, Yolanda Garcia and Adan

cadio Salinas are to be congratulated on

Saints Mormons) of Rio Grande City in-
vites the public to attend a "Roadshow " at 7
p.m. May 1.
The free performance consists of a
comedy musical show and will take place at
120 Hermosa Drive (Corner of Hermosa and
El Paseo).
Participants in the Roadshow are youths
in the Rio Grande City area. They will enter
their show into competition Saturday in
McAllen, where other churches will have
similar entries.
Elder Black, president of the Rio Grande
City Branch of the Church encourages

night.
