Women Trend-Setters
Of Starr County
By Esther P. Gonzalez
Ramona Guerra was one of the
early teachers who taught the
English language in the Elementa-
ry grades of the rural schools in
Starr County. A four year tempo-
rary Certificate was issued to
Ramona at Rio Grande City, the
5th. day of September, 1911, by Mr.
Samuel P. Vale, County Superin-
tendent of Public Inst ruction.
This historic certificate reads as
follows:
OFFICE OF COUNTY SUPER-
INTENDENT OF PUBLIC IN-
STRUCTION, STARR COUNTY.
TEXAS. COUNTY SECOND
GRADE CERTIFICATE
The holder hereof , Miss Ramona
Guerra, has furnished evidence of
good moral character, and of
ability to speak and use the English
Language and has passed the
prescribed examination at Rio
Grandre City, Texas, on the 1st.
and 2nd. day of September, 1911,
and the County Board of Exam-
iners has made a sworn report
stating that she has made the
required grades, and recommend-
ing that she should receive this
County Second Grade Certificate
which authorizes her to contract to
to teach in the elementary grades
of the public schools in this county.
This certificate is valid from the
date of the exami.natin until August
31, 1915, the 4th. anniversary of the
thirty first day of August of the
calendar year in which it was
issued, unless canceled by lawful
authority.
Witness my hand and seal of
office at Rio Grande City, Texas,
this 5th. day of Septemeber A. D.
1911.
Samuel P. Vale, County Superin-
tendent of Public Instruction
Ramona was the third daughter
born to Deonicio Guerra and Maria
Guerra of Mirasoles Ranch of Starr
County where she was born
January 10, 1891. Her parents are
descendants of the early colonizers
and founders of Villa Mier settled
by Escandon in 1753.
Her primary teachers at
Mirasoles Ranch were Gabriela
Sanez and Isabel Gutierrez. After
completing the primary grades,
Ramona attended the Immaculate
Conception School at Rio Grandre
City. The parochial schools at
Roma and Rio Grande City were
the cradles of education beginning
in the late ItJOO's. Sisters of Mercy
taught for many years at both
public and parochial schools ani^,
their noble contribution will always
remain a fundamental part of the
educational history of Starr Coun-
ty. The Immaculate Conception
School is celebrating its 100th
anniversary this year
Ramona also attended classes in
arts and crafts an'1 music at
Ciudad Mier. Mexii o, where she
specialized in ilk flowers and
drawing. Her immediate family
have preserved beautiful pencil
drawings done by Ramona during
her teaching years.
Ramona served the rural schools
of Starr County for many years
until her retirement in 1923. She
served with love and dedication by
touching and inspiring the lives of
children and youth, many of whom
presently serve in various careers
and professions.
She taught the ungraded schools
at Fronton, San Roman, Las
Viboras, and El Sauz. Her sis-
ter.Maria, taught at San Roman
and San Carlos, her cous-
in,Celestina Gonzalez, taught at
Escobares in the late 1920's, and
her other cousin , Guadalupe
Guerra , taught at El Sauz
Ramona's descendants can trace
their roots to a family of pioneer
women educators whose legacy of
public service has no bounds They
engraved in the hearts of many the
philosopy of life that life is worth
living only when dedicated to
public service and the benefit of all
in general.
Ramona married Felimon Perez
in 1923 and has two daughters,
Hermelinda and Imelda.
Hermlinda married Julian
Gonzalerz, Jr. and has four chil-
dren. Imelda married Roberto
Martinez and has two children
Ramona's inspiration to future
generations is well shown in the
lives of her grandchildren and
nieces as follows!
