educational, not extracurricular,
activities. Zaffirini complained that
House Bill 72 was passed before all
the implications were fully known,
and without adequate input by
teachers and educators. She added,
"I have 13 years teaching experi-
ence. I will work with teachers,
educators, and parents."
The senatorial hopeful exulted
that "I have strong teacher support
throughout the district," having
won the endorsement of a Starr
County teachers political action
committee active in fighting
TECAT.
She also is being supported by
Iris Porter, the Pleasanton teacher
whose challenge to the con-
troversial test sparked widespread
teacher activism, on the political
and legal fronts.
Zaffirini contends her experience
with the state Democratic Party in
Austin is a big plus that puts her on
a "first-name basis with numerous
statewide elected officials." She
currently is vice-chairman of the
Texas Democratic Party, and
added, "I've been working with the
Democrats here (in Starr County)
since 1978."
Accompanying Zaffirini to the
Herald offices was Armando
Garcia, a new member of the Starr
County Water Board, and Jaime M
Ramirez, recently elected to the
Rio Grande City CISD board of
trustees.
Zaffirini summed up the case for
her election as follows, "We need a
senator with the energy to repre-
sent the district well. I'm continu-
ing my whirlwind, grassroots
campaign, and that's how I will
represent the district. I will < .n-
tinue to come her (after being
elected), and meet people in their
meeting halls, and churches, etc. "
She took a jab at her opponent,
