summer vacation and introduced
the guests for the evening, Mrs.
Delia Gleber and Mrs. Gilberto E
Garcia.

three student guests from the Rio
Grande City High School who were
introduced to the members by Mrs.
Arturo Trevino, Jr. The student
guests were Emma Victoria
Paisley, Clarissa Iris Garcia, and
Honorio H. Garza, Jr.
Emma Victoria Paisley, a 16-
year old exchange student from
Bristol England, is staying with
Mr and Mrs. Gilberto E. Garcia
and is attending the Rio Grande
City High School.
Clarissa Iris Garcia, 17-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilberto
E. Garcia, is a senior who is
serving the Rio Grande City High
School as student council president.
Honorio H. Garza, Jr., 17-year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Honorio H.
Garza, Sr., is a senior currently

president.
Mrs. Joel Guerrero, Jr., pres-
ented the program for the evening
on the Country of Costa Rica. Mrs.
Guerrero's program centered
around Costa Rican President,
Oscar Arias Sanchez.
She said, "Arias has presented
and image of accessibility and
personal integrity that has startled
and delighted his countrymen. The
president can often be seen
threading through downtown San
Jose behind the wheel of his jeep
and in a part of the world where
pretty corruption is often taken for
granted. Arias is known for his
persistence, a quality that in the
1986 elections brought him the
presidency he had longed for since
childhood. Though Costa Rican
Society is given to Latin Machismo,
Arias has been successful in
bringing six women into the top
ranks of government."
Following the program,
Mrs.McAlpine held a short business
meeting.

Doctors Part Of Upcoming
Medical Conference
MCALLEN- A medical confer-
ence, featuring some of the most
prominent health figures in the
nation and several doctors from
Starr County, is being put together
in South Texas.
The 22nd Medical-Surgical Con-
ference of the Rio Grande Valley
next April 6-8 in McAllen will
confront man's five major killers:
heart disease, cancer, lung disease,
trauma and strokes. It is sponsored
by the Valley Chapter of the Texas
Academy of Family Physicians.
The conference has grown in
stature through the years until it
rivals many state and national
medical meetings. It brings
together some of the nation's top
physicians, including the presidents
of national medical associations
and such surgical pioneers as Dr.
Denton Cooley of Houston.
Dr. Mario Ramirez of Rio
Grande City, conference co-
chairman, said the meeting is
shaping up as "one of the top
conferences in the nation," focus-
ing on McAllen as a medical center
in the eyes of some of the country's
leading physician and speakers.
„The conference annually
alternates sites between McAllen
and Brownsville. Dr Ramirez, who

man, credits the success of the
local conference to "the local
doctors who work so very hard to
add a personal touch." He said
little acts such as giving a red rose
to speakers' wives, together with
receptions, dances and trips to
Mexico have helped build a reputa-
tion that reaches to national levels.
Other Starr County physicians
volunteering as committee mem-
bers for the 22nd conference are
Dr. Raymond Mussett of Roma,
scientific programs; and Dr.
Ramiro Narro of Rio Grande City,
accreditation and audio visual aids.
Dr. Jaime Rueda of McAllen,
general chairman, said the confer-
ence's reputation is based on high
achievement through the years. He
emphasized that medical
specialists as well as family
doctors will benefit from the
three-day meeting."
"The conference is for all doctors
from the Valley," Rueda said
"Our specialists can learn from the
experts on the program, and they
can spread their education to these
family doctors. There's something
for everyone."
He said cardiologists can profit
from a talk by Dr. William J
Castelli, the man in charge of the
famous Framingham Heart Study,
and from Dr Cooley, who attends
all the McAllen conferences.
Pulmonologists can learn new-
methods of treating chronic
obstructive pulmonary diseases, he
said, neurologists can be updated
on cardiovascular disease, and
surgeons can learn more about
trauma
The conference is accredited for
20 hours of continuing medical
education. Dr Rueda said the $150
registration fee is a bargain
compared to most other conference
costs of $300 to $400.
Medical politics also will be
reported on at the meeting The
presidents of the American Medical
Association and the American
Academy of Family Physicians will
discuss national topics such as
legislation and changes in
Medicare and Medicaid regula-
tions
