Roma Catholic Daughters
Hold March Meeting

Court Oblates of Mary
Immaculate No. 1978 Catholic
Daughters of the Americas of
Roma, Texas held their regular
meeting at the Parish Hall on
March 2, 1989 with Regent Miss
Araceli Gonzalez, presiding.
Mrs. Carolina Guerra led the
opening prayer with the intention
for the sick of the Parish, the youth
and the intentions of each one
present.
Minutes of the previous meeting
were read by Miss Ramoncita
Guerra, secretary. The treasurer's
report of the Court's finances was
given by Mrs. Mary L. Zer.tgraf.
Reading of communications and
correspondence was made by the
regent. These included the State's
CDA quarterly letter; Membership
and Extension information; letter
from District Deputies with regards
to the Tri-Valley District meeting
to be held on April 15th.
Committee reports were as
follows: Miss Gonzalez, regent
reported on the Junior C.D.A. Day
which was celebrated with a brunch.
Gifts of small balloon arrangements
were given to J.C.D. A. members
by their mothers. After the brunch,
members attended Noon Mass
accompanied by their mothers.
Mrs. Mary L. Zentgraf of the
Apostolate Committee reported on
the retreat being planned for Palm
Sunday.
Mrs. Emilia Reyes of the
Community committee informed
members that all educational
materials had been collected from
students participating in the CDA
Educational Contest
Courtesy committee member,
Miss Lupita Gonzalez, stated that a
"Get Well Card" had been sent to
Mrs. Anna Guerra.
The successful "Bake Sale" report
was given by Ms. Zentgraf much to
the delight of the members.
Finalized plans on the upcoming
C.D.A. Bingo were reported by
Mrs. Celia R. Saenz. This will be
held on April 8, 1989 at 6:30 p.m.
Mrs. Emilia Reyes and Mrs. Mary
L. Zentgraf were named as
Chairperson for this event.
Discussion was centered on
regards to the Tri-Valley District
meeting in which this Court will
be in charge of the Program. Local
speakers featured will be Father
Roy Snipes, O.M.I., Father Todd
Amberg, O.M.I., Father Eddie Villa
and Mrs. Julia Salinas, CCD
Coordinator for Our Lady of Refuge
Catholic Church.
The Scholarship Committee,
appointed by Miss Gonzalez,
regent, consists the following
members: Mrs. Lucila Pena,
chairman; Mrs. Noelia Munoz,
Mrs. Noemi Munoz, Mrs, Delia
Garza and Miss Carmela Naranjo.
Election of Nominating
Committee for new officers was
held. Serving on this committee
will be Mrs. Noemi
Munoz-chairman, Mrs.
Refugia(Cuca) Gonzalez, Mrs.
Emilia Reyes, Mrs. Olga Escobar
and Miss Idolina Guerra.
Priest Appreciation Day
committee will be chaired by Mrs.
Yolanda Gonzalez and Mrs. Albcza
Gonzaiez.
The meeting adjourned as
members prayed one mystery of the
rosary led by Mrs. Celia Saenz.

COUNCIL SWEETHEART AND BEAU- Lori Lyn
Peterson and Kicky Lopez are representing the Starr
County 4-H Council as 1988-89 Sweetheart and Beau.
They were elected by their fellow council members for
their service to Starr County 4-H. Lori and Ricky were
recognized at the February 4-H meeting, at the annual
Starr County Fair Queen's Pageant, and will ride in
various parades throughout the parade.

Lori Lyn Peterson of Starr
Grande 4-H Club and Ricky Lopez
of Rio 4-H Club have been elected
by members of the Starr County
4-H Council to represent them as
their 1988-89 Sweetheart and Beau.
Lori, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Peterson, is a senior at
Rio Grande City High School. A
past president of her club, she is
currently serving as club advisor
and Council president.
She serves as Vice-President on
the District level and is a member
of the Texas 4-H Council. A Gold
Starr winner in 1987, she won the
Rising Star Award and the Danforth
"I Dare You" award in 1988.
She will represent Texas 4-H'ers
as a delegate to National 4-H
Conference in Washington, D.C. in
April. She has qualified to attend
State Round Up in College Station
in April with her District Food
Show winning Pcach Bread.
She attended Round Up last year
and won first place in Farm and
Ranch Management along with her
partner, Jesse Guerra. Their
illustrated talk was on the 1015Y
onion.
The year before, Lori went to
State in Public Speaking. Her
record books have won District and
qualified for state for the last three
years. Her main projects in 4-H
have been Fashion Revue, Foods
and Nutrition, Leadership,
Livestock, and Public Speaking.
Ricky, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ruben C. Lope/., is a junior at Rio
Grande City High School. His
current offices include
Vicc-Prcsidcnt of the Rio 4-H
Club, Reporter and Beau of County
Council, and Public Relations
Officer for the South District 12
Water Board Okays
Audit Report
The Board of Directors of the
Starr County Water District heard
and approved the annual Audit
Report at the regular monthly
meeting on Tuesday.
The report was given by ihc
McAllcn accounting firm of
Davis-Hart. The report was
favorable to the Water District in
virtually all aspects.
Water District Manager Efrain
Duran asked, "How is the audit
concerning the budget?" Gracic
Silva, one of the auditing firm's
partners, replied, "It is good. You
are mccung your debts."
Duran said that on Thursday,
March 16, he will represent the
Water District before the Texas
Water Development Board in
Austin. Duran noted, "The staff of
that agency has recommended that
the state refund $882,000 in bonds
owed to the Farmers Home
Administration. The government is
doing this at a reduced interest rate."
Board member Reymundu Guerra
moved and Miguel Lopez, Sr.,
seconded that the Audit Report for

Council.
He was a Gold Star recipient in
1988. He has been to State Round
Up the last two years with his
Method Demonstration in
Citizenship, and his Record Book
placed in State in 1988. He went to
District with his Shrimp Muffins
in 1987, and he was Co-Chairman
of County Food Show in 1988.
He was Class II Champion with
his Simbrah Heifer at the recent
Youth Fair and was named Grand
Champion Senior Showman of
Beef Heifers.
Ricky is Chairman for the
upcoming Districtwide Rally Day
to be held in the Spring.
His major 4-H projects have been
Citizenship, Leadership, Foods and
Nutrition, Recreation and
Livestock, including lambs,
rabbits, and heifers. He has narrated
many events, including
Achievement Night and Fair
Pageants. He led the Opening
Ceremonies at the Stale
Convention of Extension Home
Economists at South Padre Island
in 1988.
Lori and Ricky both attended
State Congress in Austin in 1988
and plan to attend Congress in San
Antonio in 1989. They have
attended and led sessions at District
Leadership Labs for for several
years, and both arc past chairmen of
Starr County Fair Pageants.
They have helped on community
projects, such as telethons and
bucket brigades for Easter Seals and
Muscular Dystrophy Association.
They have helped with cemetery
cleanups and Veteran's and
Memorial Day services. Both have
been active members of their clubs
and county council.

notes payable were $170,285, total
liabilities were $1,751,565, total
fund equity was $7,020,880, and
total liabilities and fund equity were

According to the report, total
operating revenues were
$1,169,744, as of Dec. 31, 1988,
and total operating expenditures
were $1,160,746, leaving a total
surplus of $8998. Overall, the
excess of revenues over
expenditures came out to $16,400
when other financing sourccs were
considered. A
