County Officials Keep Wary
Eye On Hurricane Diana
Sheriff's Report ,
Slarr County officials kept a
watchful eye early this week on a
brewing hurricane that ultimately
made landfall far south of the Rio
Grande Valley on the Mexico coast.
On Sunday, Tropical Storm
Diana crossed the Yucatan
Peninsula, and some weather
experts suggested the storm might
head in the Valley's direction. Early
Tuesday, the storm reached
hurricane strength in the Gulf of
Mexico, but made landfall hundreds
of miles south of Brownsville on
the Mexico coast south of
Tampico. The storm had 85
mile-per-hour sustained winds at the
time of landfall. The minimum
wind strength for hurricanes is 74
miles per hour
Sherill Gene Falcon said
Monday, "I have a stall meeting
with our stal l later this afternoon to
talk about emergency preparations,
if necessary. I met my jail staff this
morning to prepare for this and
possible other storms."
Falcon added, "We're trying to
work out schedules and make sure
our emergency equipment
(including generators and the radio
lower) is in good condition. We're
making sure that there are adequate
supplies of fuel."
The sherill expressed concent that
"if wc get a lot of water and
problems with the sewage, it could
nosT- spriniis nroblcms for ibp i ni
where there are more than 100
inmates."
Falcon expressed concern that
excessive rains from Diana or any
other storm could make several low
water crossings in the county
dangerous. He singled out the rest
area cast of Alto Bonito, where a
small creek is located, and several
low areas on FM 755 near the
highway turnoff to McCook as
potentially hazardous areas. He also
noted, "La Rosita between Roma
and Rio Grande City is a very low
area."
On Monday, County Judge J.M.
Martinez, Jr., said, "We have a very
good team ready; wc would be
working with the school district.
Wc can get shelters ready at a
moment's notice, if needed. It's just
too early to tell now what the
storm will do."
Martinez, noting the extreme
drought conditions that have held
sway in Starr County for some
time, noted that the levels of the
Rio Grande River and Falcon Lake
are quite low at this time. Keeping
that in mind, he expressed the
opinion that serious flooding
problems were unlikely.
A number of individuals
expressed hope Monday that Diana
would bring general and substantial
rains to break the drought. As of
Tuesday night, however, the Rio
Grande City area had received only
light showers.

indicated that the deadline was to be
extended to Friday, Aug. 3 to give
interested parties more time to
submit bids. As of early last week,
at least four firms had expressed
interest in bidding for a new press
box, Cano indicated.
The superintendent said, "The
athletic department recommended
that a new press box be built. My
recommendation favoring a new
press box was based on safety
considerations."
From Page 1
Cano stated, "I have been told
that building a new press box
would lake approximately two
weeks."
