Former Rio Native Wins
UT Achievement Award
Ariel Amador, a recent graduate
of Lamesa High School and a
former resident of Rio Grande City,
has been awarded a S1 (),(KH) Texas
Achievement Award scholarship
from the University of Texas.
Ariel, the son of Leonel and
Azucena Amador, is the grandson of
Angelita G. Rosa and the late
Eliseo B. Rosa of Rio Grande City.
His paternal grandmother is the late
Juana Amador, also of Rio Grande
City.
The scholarship is awarded to
deserving minority students who
demonstrate outstanding leadership
and scholastic abilities and is also
based on test data oiid
recommendations Irom high school
counselors.
The University of Texas will
contribute S2000 per year for up to
five years of undergraduate study at
a value of $10,000.
"Counselor Cheryle Simmans
gave me the application for the
award. I filled it out and later I was
notified that 1 had won the award
said Amador.
During his high school years,
Amador participated in football,
basketball and band. He was active
in the gifted and talented program,
"Odyssey of the Mind", and in
U.l.L competition. He was aiso a
member of the American Computer
Science League.
Among the honors the
18-year-old has received arc: Who's
Who Among American High
School Students; two Tandy
Technology Scholar awards, one lor
Ariel Amador
being in the academic top two
percent ol his graduating class and
one for academic excellence in
Math, Science, and Computer
Science; and the Presidential
Academic Fitness Award for
outstanding academic achievement
Amador is also a winner of a
local Hardy and Bess Morgan
scholarship and a Lamesa
Mexican-American Community
scholarship.
Ariel will begin studies in the
fall at the University ol lexas at
Austin, where he plans to major in
electrical engineering.
Ariel is ;i computer operator with
Nix Implement Co. in the Lamesa
area. Lamesa is located south of
Lubbock in West Texas.
Firefighter Appreciation

County Judge J.M. Martinez, Jr.,

Montalvo ol Rio Grande City.

Mrs. Maria C. Montalvo and the
late Rafael Montalvo of Rio Grande

Marcella, who attends Rio Grande
City High School, was nominated
lor this National Award by her high

On Aug 1, the Freshmen
attended then lirst week ol sumniei
band This proved to be a
promising beginning lor the
Freshmen in their Mighty Rattler
Band expenenee.
Through the week they learned
basic marching and playing
fundamentals. Numerous awards
were presented for outstanding and
most improved marchers. 1 he
entire week proved to be a total
success.
Starting on Aug. 6, the entire
Mighty Marching Rattler Band
began in summer band schedule.
Through sectional work and lull
band rehearsals the selections lor
this year's show aie beginning to
take form. Improvement has
definitely been evident throughout
the whole band.
The first lull week ol suinmci
band was a learning experience lor
all. T hroughout all the hard work
there was moments ol enjoyment
For example, Cap Night was held
on Thursday, Aug 9.
We would like to extend a sincere
thank you to all band members who
took their time to improve the
Mighty Rattler Band.
