LETTERM AN RETURNING—Eddy Martinez, Rio
Grande City High School junior, had his track season
cut short with injuries, but Coach Rey Ramirez looks
forward to : aving this versatile athlete return for the
1995 season. Eddy, who was the 1993 100-meter
district champion, was at the top of the Rio Grande
Valley Honor Roll at one point during the 1994 season
with a time of 10.92. He consistently placed in the
100 and 200 meter events, as well as anchoring the
sprint relay for Rio High, which placed high
throughout the season and competed at regional.

PUBLIC NOTICE
The South Texas Regional Review Committee has
scheduled its organizational meeting of FY '94/'95 on
July 13, 1994, at 10:00 a.m., at the South Texas
Development Council, Wing Conference Room, 1718
E. Calton Rd., Laredo, Texas. The purpose of the
meeting will be to discuss and adopt the 1994/95
Regional Review Committee guidebook which in-
cludes scoring procedures for Community Develop-
ment fund projects. This year, the South Texas region
has been allocated a total of $2,556,030 for CDBG
projects.
The South Texas Regional Review Committee mem-
bers are appointed by Governor Richards for a two
year term. Committee members from Webb County
are: Committee Chairperson Judith Gutierrez, County
Judge Mercurio Martinez, Jr., Commissioner Arnulfo
"Fito" Santos, Commissioner Jorge De La Garza.
The South Texas Regional Review Committee mem-
bers from Jim Hogg County area: County Judge
Horacio S. Ramirez, Commissioner Agapito "Cuate"
Molina, Jr., Commissioner Jose Zuniga, III.
Zapata County is represented by County Commis-

VELA TO THE RESCUE- EH Vela was called on to
fill some very fast shoes during the recent District
31-5A track and field meet, held at McAllen Memorial
Stadium. Eli, a senior at Rio Grande City High School
and a versatile athlete who has participated in football,
baseball, basketball and track, stepped into the slot
usually held by Eddy Martinez in the relay. The 400
meter relay team placed second at district with Edgar
Solis, Jorge de la Torre, Salvador Hernandez, and Vela
competing, qualifying to compete at regional. He also
participated in the 1600 meter relay, which placed sixth
at district. This team was made up of Johnny Cantu,
Mario Guerra, Eddie Guajardo, and Vela. Vela also
placed sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.82.
