RGCCISD to launch
school year Friday
Rio Grande City Consolidated
Independent School District stall
members will begin the 1997-98
school year on Friday.
The District's New Teacher
Orientation will be at 7:^0 a.in on
Friday, Aug. 15 at the Multi-
purpose Center's Main Hall.
Meanwhile, the first day of lull
staff development, also known as
Inservice Day, will he on Monday,
Aug. 18 at the newly constructed
Rio Grande City High School.
Teachers will have inservices on
Aug. 18-19 and a work day on
Wednesday, Aug. 20, said
Christopher Bush, the RGCCISD
coordinator of public information.
The first day ol school for
students is Thursday, Aug. 21.
Personnel Director Gilberto E.
Garcia will serve as master ol
ceremony lor the new teacher
program, which includes breakfast
starting at 7:30 a.m.
The new teachers will he
welcomed by Superintendent
Ramon Hinojosa, Board of
Trustees President Basilio D.
Villarreal Jr., Rio Grande City
Mayor Baldemar Garza and La
Grulla Mayor Helen Gonzalez.
Next, Asst. Supt. for Curriculum
and Instruction Dr. Richard Irizarry,
Asst. Supt. for Business Diana A.
Pcna and Garcia will provide the
new employees with information.
Local historian R.C. Salinas and
Samuel Ramos, chairman of the
Starr County Historical
Commission, will give a historical
perspective.
The new teachers will then take a
bus tour of the schools and
.ommunity.
There will be a general faculty
meeting at the new Rio Grande
City High School starting with a
continental breakfast from 7:30-8
a.m. in the Cafetorium. The
general faculty meeting will end at
8:55 a.m.
Supt Hinojosa and Dr. lri/arry
will give opening statements at
the meeting. The JROTC will
present the colors and Senior Class
President Veronica A. Cantu will
lead the Pledge of Allegiance and
Ringgold Middle School student
Socorro Hinojosa leads the Texas
Flag Pledge.
Father Ignacio Luna of the
Immaculate Conception Church is
scheduled to give the invocation.
Asst. Supt. Pcna will introduce
guests and Board Villarreal Jr. will
deliver a special message.
The keynote speaker is Ricardo
Sanchez, a brigadier general in the
U.S. Army.
Next, Gilberto Garcia will
recognize last year's teachers of the
year Dahlian Aberin and Ana
Marie Ramirez.
Supt. Hinojosa will recognize
retired personnel before the Rev.
Richard Leggett ol First United
Methodist Church will say the
benediction.
At approximately 9 a.m.. faculty
members will divide into groups to
attend specific staff development
sessions.
Teachers will each attend four
sessions lasting 55 minutes each.
The sessions are broken down
into specific subjects, ranging from
conflict resolution to dyslexia to
ESL and internet technology.
Lunch will be from 11:15 a.m.-l
p.m. at the new Rio High's
Cafetorium.
Staff development sessions will
end at 3:25 p.m. on Aug. 18.

Mr. and Mrs. Javier L. Ramirez of Rio Grande City announce the
engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Eliza Jay, to
Carlos Cantu, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Cantu, Sr. of Edinburg.
The couple will wed at 4 p.m on Aug. 30 at Sacred Heart Church in
Escobares. The bride-elect graduated from Rio Grande City High School
and from South Texas Community College under the LVN program.
Her fiance graduated from Edinburg North High School and is employed
by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Students attending Rio Grande
City High School who live within
the highlighted area of Rio Grande
City (see map) are NOW
ELIGIBLE to be provided with
transportation services to and from
the new High School.
The Transportation Department
will have six new routes to serve
the students from this area. The
transportation services within this
area are for HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS ONLY. All other bus
routes will remain the same.
Bus route numbers and bus route
runs for this area are marked on the
map. High school routes will start
picking up students around 7:30
a.m.
Pick-up times for all Pre K
through eighth grade will be Uie
same as last year.
Bus stops and pick-up times will
be adjusted as needed. Anyone with
questions about this matter should
call 716-6838.
Comptroller aide
will offer tax help

Judith L. Montalvo of the State
Comptroller's McAllen field office
will be available Tuesday, Aug. 19
to assist local taxpayers in the Rio
Grande City area.
Montalvo will be on hand from 9
a.m. to 12 noon at the Starr
County Courthouse at 502 N.
Britton to discuss tax questions.
"State i&xes can be very complex
and we understand that taxpayers
can't just pick up and come to
Austin whenever they need answers
to their questions. That's why we
bring these free services to you,"
State Comptroller John Sharp said.
Sharp added, "Judith will be
available to deliver quick «;nd
accurate information to all tax
questions, assist with filing tax
returns, collect on delinquent taxes
and provide other valuable
information."
Those who are unable to attend
the Rio Grande City seminar can
call the Comptroller's toll free
hotline at 1-800-252-5555 for
additional assistance.
